Blues travel to Redditch in final match of season

Game 42/42.

Leiston head to Worcestershire for their final match of the season as they take on Redditch United. Leiston currently are a place above the hosts in 17th place on goal difference. Earlier in the season, Leam Howards third minute goal put Redditch in front in September last year, but Chris Henderson, Noel Aitkens and Jake Reed netted before the break to put Leiston 3-1 up. After the interval however, Howards netted again before Liam Francis equalised. But it was the Blues who grabbed the winner thanks to a late Byron Lawrence strike. Captain Tom Bullard will miss tomorrow’s game as he is injured while Matt Blake and Dominic Docherty are doubtful.
Joe Jefford will make his final league appearance for the Blues.

Redditch were established in 1891 and won various local leagues and County Cups in their early years of existence. They reached the First Round of the FA Cup in 1971, losing to Peterborough United 6-0 after drawing 1-1 in the first match in front of a crowd of 4,500. They also reached the First Round of the FA Cup in 1990, losing 3-1 Merthyr Tydfil. They won the Southern League Western Premier Division in 2003-2004, and due to league re-organisation, entered the play-offs to be promoted to the new leagues (Conference North and South). They beat Kings Lynn Town 1-0 and Merthyr Tydfil 3-0 to be promoted to the then Conference North. They stayed in the league until 2011, narrowly avoiding relegation in 2006 (on the last day of the season) and in 2007 as Scarborough were given a 10 point penalty after going into administration. They were relegated in 2011 after finishing bottom and have remained a Step 3 side ever since, losing to Leamington in the 2016 play-off semi-finals.
