Blues travel to Staffordshire to play ‘The Lambs’

Game 40/42.

Leiston travel to Tamworth tomorrow looking to end a run of 8 league games without a win.
Dominic Docherty and Matt Blake will miss tomorrow’s match due to injury but Noel Aitkens and Matt Rutterford do return to the squad.

Tamworth are currently in 12th position, four points and three positions above Leiston. Earlier in the season in August in just the fourth league match of the season, the Blues drew 2-2 against Tamworth at Victory Road. An early Jake Reed goal and a Christy Finch penalty helped the Blues to a first half lead however second half goals by Chris Lait and Akwasi Asante saw Tamworth leave with a point. ‘The Lambs’ started the season poorly but have made a good recovery to be in no danger of relegation.

Known as ‘The Lambs’, Tamworth were founded in 1933 and played at The Jolly Sailor Ground for their first year of existence but moved to The Lamb Ground a year later and have been playing there ever since. They won the FA Vase in 1989, defeating Sudbury Town 3-0 in a Replay at Peterborough United after they drew 1-1 at Wembley Stadium a few days beforehand. They won the Southern League in 2001-2002 before being promoted to the Conference a year later in the 2002-2003 season. They reached the final of the FA Trophy in 2003 but lost 2-1 to Burscough. Ex Arsenal star Paul Merson ended his playing career with Tamworth in 2006, with the midfielder making just one appearance for the club before announcing his retirement. They have reached the 3rd Round of the FA Cup three times, in the 2005/2006, 2006/2007 and 2011/2012 seasons. Last season, they finished 21st (out of 22) in the National North and were relegated to the newly formed EVO-STIK Southern Premier Central Division.
