Young Blues go out of Midweek Cup to Haverhill Rovers
The U18's went out of the Midweek Cup to Haverhill Rovers on Wednesday night 5-2.
Early in the tie, Josh Leggett got in behind the away defence, but shot straight at away keeper Luke Moule. Lewis Lindsay had a shot blocked, and Brandon Ling turned over Ben Tait's shot, but from the second corner in a row, Haverhill took the lead. A ball into the box was netted by an unmarked Harry Daniels. They doubled their lead shortly after. Cohen Micklewright struck home from the angle of the edge of the area, his shot taking a slight deflection. Ben Tait and Jake Mingay hit the woodwork, before Leiston got back into the match. Leiston won a free kick about 35 yards out, and Owen Pierce shot home brilliantly via the underside of the crossbar. Witness Mhango had a good chance to level the scores but Moule made a decent save to his right hand side. Three minutes before the first period finished, Mhango would equalise. A good through ball from Joe Murphy was latched onto by Witness Mhango and with no defenders near him he smashed home brilliantly under keeper Moule.
The second half saw Leggett once again get in but his attempt was easily caught by Moule. Cohen Micklewright hit the crossbar with a free kick, while Pierce's left hand cross was met by captain Joe Murphy, but his strike caught the head of Josh Leggett and Haverhill countered and scored. Jake Mingay got into the box to curl into Ling's bottom left hand corner. Moments later and Haverhill doubled their lead. A corner wasn't dealt with and Mingay was on hand at the back post to double Haverhill's advantage. Pierce had a free kick palmed away by Moule, but late on Mingay made the game safe with a close range effort from Josh Lewis's cross. On the night, the away side deserved their win in the end.
