The Blues entertain St Ives Town in the Emirates FA Cup First Round Qualifying tomorrow afternoon.

Having taken 8 points from their first 6 league games, Leiston will look to have a break from the league and try to have a cup run in the most prestigious cup in the world.

There were some bright spots against Needham Market on Bank Holiday, not least young Cameron Rayworth who deservedly won man of the match from match sponsors, the LFC Supporters. Joe McNeil also came on to make his first Senior appearance, having played numerous games for the U18’s and Reserves (now U23’s) in the past couple of campaigns.

St Ives currently are 19th, with the Blues 12th, and the Cambridgeshire side drew with Kettering Town 1-1 last week, conceding an equaliser with just seconds to go.

Leiston defeated St Ives Town twice last season in the league. Goals from Adam Mills and Adam Bailey-Dennis gave the side a 2-1 away win last September, before a Will Davies goal gave the Blues a win in late January last season.

This will be the third meeting in FA competitions between the two sides. In 1988, Leiston lost 4-2 to St Ives in the FA Vase, with Dale Threadkell and Glyn Clouting on target for the Blues in an Extra Preliminary Round.

In 2007, the Blues lost 3-2 to St Ives in the same competition.

St Ives Town reached the Fourth Round Qualifying stage last season in the FA Cup,

Blues midfielder Ollie Saunders said in the week: -

“We have had a good bank holiday weekend. Playing two games in three days is never easy, and we haven’t got the biggest squad either, with a few out due to injury. So I think picking up four points out of six in a tough away game and a local derby isn’t a bad points tally at all and will hopefully give us some momentum going forward. On a personal note, it was excellent to captain the team in the local derby too.”

If the games ends in a draw on Saturday, then the Blues will play St Ives Town in a Replay on Tuesday night.

The side have picked up points against Great Yarmouth Town (0-0, A), Dussindale & Hellesdon Rovers (3-2, H) and Diss Town (1-0, A) in the past few weeks, with the side also playing Needham Market U23’s but going down 3-2 at home. The U23’s now sit 16th in the league table.
