Super away win on their travels for the table topping Blues

Leiston recorded their fourth League win of the season to maintain their lead at the top of the early Ryman Premier Division table. The Blues recorded a third win in five visits to the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium with a goal in either half. Richard Wilkins made one change from the side that defeated Lewes on Saturday with John Sands starting in place of Christy Finch while Seb Dunbar was still missing through injury. It was Enfield who started strongly with lively striker Corey Whitely going close with one effort producing a tremendous save from Ashlee Jones with just five minutes played. Leiston had to work hard to repel the home side and then took the lead midway through the first half, slightly against the run of play. It was a scrappy goal but an important one none-the-less as from distance any one of three players could have been credited with the goal as following a foul on Joe Francis, Gareth Heath curled in a free kick. The final, faintest touch went to skipper Tom Bullard with his first goal of the season. Despite the 23rd minute set back the home side continued to cause the Blues problems with Leiston remaining resolute under sustained pressure with Enfield causing plenty of problems. Joe Francis almost added a second for the Blues after a neat counter attack but fired wide while the dangerous Corey Whitely raced clear only to fire well wide of the target with just Ashlee Jones to beat at the other end.

After a determined opening half from the Blues they edged further ahead with the second half barely three minutes old. Yet again the goal came via a set piece this time Leon Ottley-Gooch the grateful recipient. Danny Cunningham’s excellent delivery picked out Tom Bullard whose header across the face of the goal gave Leon Ottley-Gooch a simple finish from inside the six yard box. The second goal certainly knocked the stuffing out of the Towners and although they were afforded possession the Blues were well set up to protect their two goal lead. The home side began to get a little frustrated with the lack of clear chances and a spate of yellow cards were flashed midway through the second half and also included in this period was a fourth yellow card of the season for Stuart Boardley. With the game becoming stretched Leiston sensed more joy and both Joe Francis and Christy Finch were denied by Nathan McDonald in the home goal. A thoroughly solid and professional display from the visitors who also gave a Ryman League debut to Jack Baker late in the game.
