Blues return to winning ways with early season double

After a heartbreaking late defeat at the hands of leaders Grays Athletic on Saturday, the Blues quickly returned to winning ways with a hard working and solid display over a lively Enfield Town side. Two goals in a five minute first half blitz were the catalyst for the win along with some resolute defending certainly in the second half. Strangely this was a rather speedy reverse fixture as the two sides had only met two weeks previously at the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium where a brace of goals from set pieces saw the Blues claim three points. The Towners, who picked up a useful point on their travels last time out at Bognor Regis Town, started lively and forced an early corner after some clever movement across the Blues back line. First opportunity for the hosts arrived on 16 minutes but Christy Finch was unable to keep his header down from a Gareth Heath cross. Leiston were gaining momentum and opened the scoring on 18 minutes. Stuart Boardley's long throw from the left touch line into the heart of the six yard box was diverted towards the far post by Joe Jefford and into the path of Gareth Heath who powered home his header. Enfield responded minutes later but after good work from Tyler Campbell and Bobby Devyne, Nathan Livings miss-kicked inside the box. It proved costly as on 23 minutes the hosts had doubled their advantage with a fine strike from Christy Finch. Gareth Heath's ball into the box was headed clear by Jordan Lockie but straight into the path of Blues striker Christy Finch on the edge of the box whose sweet, instinctive strike found the top of the net beyond a floundering Nathan McDonald in the visitors goal. Now the Blues were in control playing some excellent controlled football and creating chances at will. Seb Dunbar's neat back heel allowed Joe Francis to cross into the box but Gareth Heath headed wide. Danny Cunningham saw an effort whistle wide while Nathan McDonald was at full stretch to claim Joe Jefford's header with Gareth Heath lurking ominously. But the visitors remained a threat ended the half strongly. Darnell Wynter forcing Ashlee Jones into a low save at his left hand post while some frantic defending after a trio of corners somehow denied Darnell Wynter a goal in first half stoppage time.

Buoyed by their end to the opening half the Towners continued in the same vein and on the front foot. The Blues looked content to try and soak up the early second half pressure but on 52 minutes this almost backfired as Harold Joseph rose highest to meet Nathan Livings centre only to see Ashlee Jones, with the faintest of touches, turn his header onto the bar. Enfield continued to press high in the home half with Leiston content to counter. This ploy looked effective as Joe Francis forced Nathan McDonald into a low save and then Gareth Heath fired over from quick home attacks. Gareth Heath headed Stuart Boardley's corner wide just after the hour mark and then the woodwork came to Enfield's rescue as Joe Francis saw his 20 yard effort cannon back off the foot of the post after a searching run through the visitors defence. Possession wise, Enfield were on top but they were getting little joy in the final third from a well organised Blues defence. The hosts were creating the better openings and after substitute Tom Winter saw a header skim the bar and land on the roof of the net on 78 minutes another substitute, Patrick Brothers, toe poked an effort wide from the edge of the box. Try as they might,
Enfield just could not get a goal for their efforts as Ashlee Jones saved well to deny Towners substitute Harry Ottaway and then he was called into action again in the final minute, saving low to his right an effort from Jared Small as the Blues returned to winning ways.
