Stoppage time goal stuns rivals Tonbridge Angels

Leiston came into this game fresh from a midweek break and made a couple of changes from the win a week before against AFC Dunstable writes Craig Cooper. Tom Bullard came in for Stuart Boardley, while John Sands started instead of Joe Francis. Leiston were soon on the back foot and Tonbridge had a free kick in a dangerous position on four minutes but Ashlee Jones palmed round Tom Phipp’s effort to his left. Christy Finch pulled up with less than ten minutes played with an apparent groin injury, Stuart Boardley coming on in his place. John Sands had a cracking effort after the keeper came out and headed clear, but his half volley from some thirty five yards went just wide. Tonbridge did make some good moves around the Leiston box but the away side were cutting the final ball out or making that last ditch block. Nathan Elder had a great opportunity to put the home side ahead but his header went just over from close range. Leiston were not getting the midfield involved as much as they would want and only occasionally threatened with Danny Cunningham sending in some good deliveries but to no avail. Leiston restricted the hosts to a couple of long range shots before the break making it difficult for them to create some clear cut chances.

The second half couldn’t have started much worse for Leiston with Blake Saker giving away a penalty just three minutes into the half. There weren’t too many complaints from the visitors with the decision but the visitors goal remained in tact as Tom Phipp sliced his spot kick wide to Ashlee Jones’ right hand side. Leiston then had a good chance but Tom Bullard headed just over from Danny Cunningham’s corner. Ashlee Jones did well to save a driven shot by Nick Wheeler and Nathan Elder again shot over when in a good position. John Sands had an effort which went just wide of keeper Antonio di Bernado’s post as Leiston kept plugging away. Both teams made some changes to personal but that didn’t stop the home side remaining on top. From a Leiston corner John Sands hooked a shot that went just wide yet again. With Tonbridge pressing forward Leiston were really standing firm in the final stages and when the ball broke to Patrick Brothers on the halfway line as the clock ticked in the second minute of injury time, the unlikeliest of outcomes happened. He embarked on a mazy run that took him 50 yards eluding several home players before entering the home box and calmly beating Antonio di Bernado low to his left and finding the net via the upright to send the away supporters crazy. Joe Francis then replaced the hard working John Sands and Leiston nearly added a second but Gareth Heath saw his shot well saved by Antonio di Bernado after a good run.
