Finch double helps the Blues to victory

Leiston moved back into the play off positions after what turned out to be a comfortable three points in a match sponsored by EDF Energy Sizewell C. It's been a good week for Richard Wilkins' side, recording back to back home wins against two sides in the bottom six. Alex Rossis continued to deputise for the injured Ashlee Jones while Leon Ottley-Gooch returned to the starting line up since limping off in the Boxing Day win over Needham Market. Just like the previous home game the Blues started strongly attacking the Fairground End and their bright start to the game was rewarded on nine minutes, Christy Finch converting from a tight angle after a splendid curling effort from Gareth Heath rebounded off the upright. It was Finch's first goal since Boxing Day and you could see the relief etched on his face. He didn't have wait long for a second goal, just eleven minutes in fact as he grabbed his fourteenth goal of the season. Some great play from Gareth Heath and Billy Clark down the left brought a corner. From Billy Clark's delivery Christy Finch rose between defenders to powerfully head home. Leiston were totally in control with the visitors attacks well controlled by Tom Bullard and Joe Jefford. A super finger tip save from Budd in the VCD goal denied Leon Ottley-Gooch from a header although the Assistant's flag was raised. Leiston looked threatening every attack so it was no surprise when they added a third goal five minutes before the break. A couple of Danny Cunnigham corners were well defended but from the last the ball found its way to Gareth Heath who cut inside the box before curling a fine effort high into the far corner with Leon Ottley-Gooch chasing it in to ensure it found the net. For a few moments there was a little confusion as to whether Leon Ottley-Gooch had got the final touch but an adamant Gareth Heath was credited with goal, reinforced by Referee Wilson at half time. The visitors improved after the break but it was still the home side asking all the questions with Rob Budd in the VCD goal denying Christy Finch his hatrick and also Gareth Heath as Leiston searched for further goals. In response Ricky Sappleton twice fired wide from distance while Donovan Simmonds headed wide their best chance late in the game when he was unmarked from an Ashley Probets free kick. Compared to the opening half the second half lacked the excitement with a host of nearly opportunities but Leiston had done more than enough in the opening forty five minutes to secure their eleventh home win of the campaign.
