Derby day delight for the Blues

Leiston, unbeaten still this season, were still missing Chris Henderson (suspended), Patrick Brothers (injured) and Matt Blake (unavailable) for this local derby, however, welcomed back Tom Bullard who was missing on Saturday. Joe Jefford dropped to the bench for captain Tom Bullard, with Sam Ford replacing Matt Blake.

On a very hot afternoon, both teams failed to get going in the first 20 minutes, with play from both sides very patchy. The first real chance of the game fell to Dominic Doherty who headed over from Robert Eagle, and he was well placed again moments later when Robert Eagle crossed but once again failed to hit the target. Rob Eagle's corner then smashed the crossbar as Leiston were starting to become the more dominant team. Jacek Zielonka had a long shot from distance but this didn't trouble Leiston custodian Marcus Garnham and drifted well wide. Leiston won a free kick on the edge of the Lowestoft box, however, Kyle Hammond's shot was easily dealt with by home Man of the Match on the day Ben Dudzinski. Another chance saw Kyle Hammond cross that was met by Dominic Docherty yet again but it was straight at Dudzinski. Byron Lawrence shot over as Lowestoft were now all over the place. At the back, Leiston looked calm and assured with Jake Reed working hard but getting no reward up front. Lowestoft did have a half chance when Marcus Garnham punched away a free kick only for Reed, but he failed to get a good connection on the ball. Kyle Hammond's effort flew over the home bar, before Joe Marsden's great run and one-two with Christy Finch saw his left foot shot smash the bar. Tom Bullard hit the foot of the Lowestoft post after a headed attempt from a corner. In one final assault before the interval, Robert Eagle's corner was well claimed by the assured Dudzinski.

Lowestoft started the better side after the break, and came close a couple of times but Marcus Garnham palmed the first effort for a corner. Jake Reed had an opening but his shot was well blocked. On 51 minutes, Leiston took the lead. A good team move ended with Robert Eagle hooking the ball back into the danger zone and Rory McCauley could only put through his own net. Leiston would double their lead shortly afterwards. Another superb run by ex Lowestoft player Joe Marsden from the halfway line ended with him smashing the ball hard and low to Dudzinski's left hand corner. This was a real sucker punch for Lowestoft, and a goal that really killed the match. Zielonka had a free kick that went over for the hosts, after Tom Bullard had picked up a booking for the original foul. Leiston started to sit back, but still had an opportunity through Christy Finch but his effort was saved. Sam Ford, who had worked tirelessly all afternoon, was replaced by Regan Pelling, as was the impressive Joe Marsden who gave way for Joe Jefford. Lowestoft were trying their best to get through the Leiston defence, but there was to be no late drama. There was even time for Harry Burman to make a debut appearance and Leiston saw the game out with ease. Leiston's record at Lowestoft in recent years has not been impressive, so a win was most welcome. Leiston are now five matches unbeaten and look forward to an FA Cup match at Aylesbury on Saturday afternoon.
