Blues 2 Tonbridge Angels 0
Strong Blues display secures another three points
The Blues extended their unbeaten league run to six after this victory over Tonbridge Angels in a MATCH SPONSORED BY SM DRIVER ROOFING. Glen Driver made one change to the squad from Saturday's squad with goalkeeper Charlie Beckwith replacing Kelsey Trotter on the bench.
The visitors had the first chance of the match but Alexander Akrofi fired straight at Marcus Garnham. Tom Bullard played in Christy Finch with a long ball at the back but his cross was claimed by away custodian Jonathon Henly. Byron Lawrence struck from the edge of the area but Henly gathered and then as Tonbridge tried to clear their lines, Darren Mills intercepted with a header which fell into the path of Jake Reed but he rushed his shot and the ball ballooned over the crossbar. Sam Bantick nearly got on the end of a good cross but Seb Dunbar headed out for a corner in which Tashi Jay-Kwayie sidefooted over. Darren Mills couldn’t convert a goal mouth scramble and the same player went close moments later but after timing his run to perfection he cannoned a header from Jake Reed’s cross against the bar. The last chance of note in the half fell to a Kyle Hammond who narrowly put his shot wide of Henly’s left hand post.
Chris Henderson released Jake Reed almost immediately into the second period but his cross was too high and was caught by Henly. Tonbridge should have taken the lead when Marcus Garnham pushed out Joe Turner’s shot only as far as Xavier Vidal but he somehow put the ball wide. Good build up play from the hosts lead to Christy Finch delivering from the left that Jake Reed looked to have netted but Henly got back to make a superb save. Henly was on hand just seconds later to deny Chris Henderson and from the rebound Christy Finch struck well but Henly held on well. Another couple of half chances came and went and at the other end right back Liam Smith had a brilliant run which Kyle Hammond cleared with Tonbridge players closing in. Leiston took the lead in the 72nd minute as Byron Lawrence turned on the edge of the area and brilliantly smashed into Henly’s bottom left hand corner. Christy Finch lashed high and wide when well placed not long after the restart. Another great pass from Byron Lawrence enabled Christy Finch a chance but Henly blocked. From Kyle Hammond’s corner though, Joe Jefford headed back across goal for Dominic Docherty who jumped highest to guide his header into the net. The Blues saw out the match under no great pressure with Marcus Garnham claiming well from a corner and Joe Jefford blocking a close range shot.
