Missed chances prove costly for the Blues

Worthing put a dent in Leiston’s play-off hopes as they moved away from the relegation zone. The Blues will feel hard done by as they had more than enough chances to get something out of the game but its now three successive home defeats for the Blues. Manager Glen Driver brought in Kyle Hammond and Christy Finch into the starting line up with Joe Jefford and Joe Marsden dropping to the bench, the two changes following last week's draw at Met Police.

The visitors nearly struck the first blow as within a minute of the match as Isaac Newton burst through after a mistake at the back but he put his effort wide of Marcus Garnham’s right hand post after a fine covering challenge from Curtis Haynes-Brown. Leiston took the lead after just six minutes after away keeper Cavagnari's sliced clearance landed straight to Christy Finch whose smart half volley beat the dive of Cavagnari low to his left. It could have been two just minutes later. Byron Lawrence’s corner was met by the head of Dominic Docherty but Cavagnari made an excellent flying save to his right. Worthing levelled the scores after a move that began on the right that ended with a pass across the Blues box to the left hand side where Sparks, in acres of space, had time to pick his spot and place his shot underneath Marcus Garnham. Just three minutes later and Worthing turned the game on its head as Curtis Haynes-Brown stray pass went straight to Starkey who strode forward before releasing Newton who gave Marcus Garnham no chance once more. Cavagnari saved well from Chris Henderson and was equal to a long distance strike from Byron Lawrence, while Matt Blake hit the side netting at an acute angle as the hosts responded well to going behind. Leiston deservedly equalised after Dominic Docherty stole possession off Budd in midfield before finding Matt Blake who in turn found Jack Ainsley, Ainsley releasing the over-lapping Chris Henderson whose shot was straight at Cavagnari but the Worthing keeper allowed the effort to find the net.

At the start of the second period the hosts continued to ask the questions but just before the hour mark Worthing were ahead again. Clarke out jumping Curtis Haynes-Brown inside the six yard box to head home a free kick from the Blues left hand flank. It almost got worse for the home side but Alfie Young somehow sliced wide when it looked certain he would score. Man of the Match Chris Henderson's weaving run and shot was straight at Cavagnari before the Leiston midfielder played a neat one-two with Matt Blake and faced with just Cavagnari to beat inside the box he rolled his shot agonisingly wide. Leiston were pressing well and Cavagnari somehow made a super double save to keep out efforts from substitutes Joe Jefford and Patrick Brothers inside the six yard box. In the three minutes of six added on minutes Rob Eagle created space but like Henderson, he saw his effort roll agonisingly wide of the same post and the chance of a late equaliser was gone.
