Tooting & Mitcham United 0 Blues 2
Good away win for the Blues
Glen Driver and Tony Kinsella kept the same side that beat Billericay Town last Saturday afternoon. Byron Lawrence came back into the squad, while Matt Rutterford dropped out and into the Reserves for their important Suffolk Senior Cup match.
On a dry, sunny but extremely bitter afternoon, Leiston had to work hard for the win against grafting opponents. Tooting & Mitcham, who started the day third from bottom, had the first real effort as Chase O’Neill ventured forward after a good run but his shot was well saved by Marcus Garnham in the visitors goal. Darren Mills had a good opportunity for Leiston but home goalkeeper Matte Pierson made an excellent save to deny him. Patrick Brothers then clipped the top of the crossbar while at the other end Marcus Garnham had to be alert to a Danny Bassett strike. The Blues took the lead in first half stoppage time when Patrick Brothers’ free kick was flicked on by Matt Blake with Tom Bullard volleying into the roof of the net from close range.
Juevan Spencer smashed over from close range early in the second period for Tooting & Mitcham and Peter Wedgeworth had a free kick saved by Marcus Garnham. But Leiston were keeping it tight at the back and after Seb Dunbar broke away and was fouled in the penalty area, Jack Ainsley stroked home the penalty low to Pierson's left in the 82nd minute to seal the three points. Chris Henderson jinxed past three players as the clock ticked down but saw his strike palmed onto the post by Pierson. There was no late scares for Leiston and they held on to the three points to complete their third double of the season and a second 2-0 victory over Tooting & Mitcham this season.
