Blues up to fourth as Waders suffer first defeat of the season

The Blues leapfrogged opponents Biggleswade Town to jump up to fourth as the visitors suffered their first League defeat of the season. Jake Reed scored twice and provided an assist for the third as new boss Stuart Boardley and Assistant David Head started their tenure with three points in a MATCH SPONSORED BY KEN BAILEY, TIM CHALLIS AND BARRY SPALL.Leiston were missing Seb Dunbar (suspended) and Tom Bullard (still injured) for this game, so Josh Moore came into the starting eleven.

The first few moments of this match were very even, with Patrick Brothers sending in an early cross but Dominic Docherty put his header wide. Biggleswade didn’t have to wait long after to get their first chance. Peter Clarke made the most of Harry Knights’ mistake but his effort was excellently palmed round the post by Marcus Garnham. Once again, Brothers and Docherty combined but the latter was again off target with his header. The Blues took the lead in the 26th minute. A good ball by Byron Lawrence released Jake Reed and he turned his marker well to send his strike into away keeper Sam Donkin’s bottom left hand corner. Martel Powell shot straight at Garnham before Noel Aitkens tested Donkin. Joe White had a good chance to level from a corner, but Noel Aitkens cleared on the goal line. From the resultant corner, David Longe-King’s header was eventually cleared by Josh Moore. Solomon Nwabuokei had the last opportunity of the half, but Garnham pushed his effort away to safety.

Christy Finch got behind the Biggleswade defence at the start of the second period, but Donkin dealt with his shot comfortably. Marcus Garnham punched away a dangerous cross under pressure, with referee George Byrne giving a free kick under Joe White’s forceful aerial challenge with the goalkeeper. Jonny McNamara’s super run into the penalty area allowed him to have a shot on goal, but his attempt just went wide. Ben Walster’s corner was claimed well by Marcus Garnham, while Kyle Hammond’s sliding challenge set up a move, with Christy Finch’s cross met by Jake Reed but he shot just wide of the away net. However, it wasn’t long before Leiston netted a second. Biggleswade didn’t deal with a corner, and Jake Reed fired into Donkin’s net via a slight deflection. Kyle Hammond’s free kick went wide of Donkin’s goal, and Josh Moore’s half volley was tipped over by Donkin. Biggleswade were still looking lively, but sub Matt Blake smashed home after a good move in the 82nd minute to end the visitors unbeaten run. Joe White blazed wide from close range, with Byron Lawrence putting a free kick wide late on. In the 93rd and final minute of the match, Kyle Hammond saw red for kicking out at a Biggleswade player.

Leiston now turn their attention to Tuesday night’s home match in the Southern League Challenge Cup, when Lowestoft Town visit.
