Blues beat Biggleswade Town at the Carlsberg Stadium

Leiston were missing Matt Blake (illness), George Keys (suspended) and Patrick Brothers (injured) for this match but Mason Sinclair came into the squad for the game along with Joe Potter.

The home side had the first chance of this match. David Long-King got up highest from a corner in just the 3rd minute to header an effort on the Blues goal but Marcus Garnham palmed the ball round his left hand post. The same player was then booked moments later for blocking a Marcus Garnham kick. Leiston’s first chance came from a Rob Eagle corner but Joe Jefford could only head straight at home keeper Sam Donkin. The Biggleswade custodian saved again, keeping out a Noel Aitkens effort, but it was the hosts who took the lead in the 20th minute. A ball into the area left Jordan Gent free and he side footed home from close range. Clear cut chances were at a minimum for the rest of the half. Garnham denied Liam Brooks and Gent nearly added his second but put wide however Leiston were enjoying more possession. Will Davies struck from the edge of the area with Donkin getting his body behind the ball well in the last real action of the half.

Kyle Hammond blocked a Sean Lucien strike in the opening stages of the second forty-five minutes and it was Hammond who a couple of minutes later looked to have been brought down for a penalty but referee Sean Barry waved away the protests. A good Leiston move soon saw the ball fed through to Christy Finch, but Donkin saved his attempt. Biggleswade had a great chance of their own as a cross from the right hand side was met by David Long-King but he blazed over from six yards. Will Davies shot over from outside the box while Donkin missed Rob Eagle’s cross but no one was on the end of it. Another good delivery by Rob Eagle, this time from a corner, saw Jefford head just over and a minute later Christy Finch headed straight at Donkin when well placed. In the 79th minute, the Blues were awarded a penalty as Seb Dunbar was fouled in the penalty area and Solomon Nawboukei was shown a yellow card. Rob Eagle struck his penalty into Donkin’s bottom left hand corner to level the scores. Dominic Docherty found Will Davies but the young striker was just offside while Biggleswade had a good chance early in stoppage time, with Garnham producing a good save to deny Joe White. Noel Aitkens was fouled thirty yards in front of goal and Kyle Hammond’s cross was met by Will Davies who tucked home to give Leiston the 2-1 win in the 95th minute.

This was a deserved win in the end against a side still firmly in with a shout of the play-offs. Leiston host Bedworth United on Saturday at Victory Road.
