Match Preview
Game twenty three and the half way stage of the League campaign for the Blues. Due to cup fixtures lots of clubs, including ourselves, are playing catch up and games are not usually planned this close to Christmas Day. Last season the Blues didn’t play their 23rd fixture until early January. A resurgence from the Blues which has coincided with players returning from injury, sees a leap back into fourth position, a position we last held back in October. At this very stage last season we had amassed 42 points so despite the mini slump in November, we are there-or-thereabouts compared to last season. Some strong displays especially at home have seen the side record four successive home wins and no goals conceded in the last three but that record will be tested Tuesday against Merstham.

This will be the fifth meeting between the sides with both sides sharing two wins each. Last season Merstham were one of only three sides to ‘double’ the Blues with identical 2-1 victories. The Surrey based side are currently sat bang in mid table with a 30% win record from their 23 games and come into the game boasting a five game unbeaten run. The Moatsiders have a better away record than at home and a few weeks back drew at Billericay Town so will prove a tough test and come into the game following a battling goalless draw at Burgess Hill Town on Saturday. They have some very talented players at the club including ex Blues Jake Hutchings who is currently side-lined with injury.

Glenn Driver’s side will be buoyed by a fine away win at Harrow Borough last time out and the Blues boss looks to have a healthy selection headache with Kyle Hammond now joining the list of returnees following injury. He will need a fully fit squad as Tuesday sees the first game of five very tough games in thirteen days including games against two promotion hopefuls and two local derbies.
