Slick Reserves defeat the early league leaders

Leiston greeted King’s Lynn Reserves to Victory Road and made a few changes to the team that faced Halstead the week before writes Craig Cooper. Out of the starting line-up went Charlie Hobson, Michael Crowfoot and Zehnn Young (on bench) to be replaced by Josh Merritt, Adam Horner and Ash Canham. In terms of the substitutes, out went Matthew Carsley, Chris Hammond and Jake Debenham and in came Lewis Bell and Ben Vincent whilst Ryan Sharman kept his place in the squad. The game started off a lively affair with both teams spreading the ball around nicely. Leiston had the first real chance after just five minutes when a cross by Josh Merritt from the right hand side was not claimed by the keeper and Thurlow hit over the bar from the rebound attempt. Baker had a free kick easily gathered by Pearson in the away goal and Block was also denied by a good challenge when closing in on goal. However, Leiston rode their luck midway through the half when the linesman flagged offside a Kings Lynn ‘goal’. Robert Goodwin, making his home debut in goal for Leiston, came to Leiston’s rescue twice in five minutes when an outstretched left leg denied Dans and he made another good save when he flew to his right to keep out a header moments later. There was a nasty clash when Block and Pearson collided with the away keeper falling badly on his leg. After attempting to carry on for a few minutes he decided to come off and was replaced by sub keeper Joe Coleman. Coleman made a good save with his feet to force a Leiston corner and from the resultant corner failed to hold the cross with Danny Block latching on nicely to smash the ball into the roof of the net to give the hosts a one-nil lead at the interval.

The second half started with Lynn getting on top of Leiston and Goodwin pushed the ball over the bar after a good attempt from an away player. Kings Lynn were furious when a headed effort was claimed to have been palmed away from a Leiston player but the referee waved away any appeals. Leiston then doubled their lead when Coleman did well to punch a cross away for a corner but from the corner Adam Horner volleyed home the cross eight minutes into the half. Lynn took off Beales and Dans to replace them with Biles and Setchell but this had no influence on the game. An off the ball incident saw White booked for a foul on Baker. The game continued at a good tempo with Leiston’s Baker firing just over after a well worked move. Sub Bell had another opportunity for the home side that went over. The away side were still coming at Leiston but the game was ultimately finished off with eleven minutes of normal time on the clock when after having survived a defensive scare Leiston broke with Thurlow passing to Zehnn Young who couldn’t miss to send the home dugout wild. The scoring wasn’t complete however and another home substitute this time Ryan Sharman did very well to catch Coleman off guard and lob him for the goal of the game. There was still time for Goodwin to pull off another smart save, tipping a ball over the bar from the King’s Lynn attacker. The referee finally blew a few moments later and most of the crowd could go home happy knowing they had seen a very good footballing performance from Leiston.
