Reserves narrowly defeated by their local rivals

Leiston went into their third game of the season unbeaten still and knowing a win could possibly put them top of the league writes Craig Cooper. They welcomed Tom Winter and Billy Clark into the side, while Danny Block was unavailable and Josh Sprague on the bench. In virtually the first meaningful attack of the half Woodbridge scored the opening goal. Leiston let Woodbridge cross a ball from the left go between the two central defenders and Aaron Greenwood smashed home well to Goodwin’s right hand side. Goodwin had to be alert a few minutes later when a stinging 25 yard drive was turned away to his left. Leiston were passing the ball around well at times but were lacking the killer instinct in front of goal. Tom Winter had a good chance turned away by the keeper and then Woodbridge were unlucky not to double lead when a shot was deflected onto a post. Thurlow and Merritt had efforts on goal but the leveller did come on 33 minutes when a deep corner found Kris Howlett to loop his header over Butterworth. Harry Cole had an effort just wide and both teams had half chances each before the Referee brought the half to a close.

Most of the fans watching the teams were still drinking their half time cups of tea when yet again, three minutes into the half, Woodbridge added their second as this time a ball was played into the centre from the right hand side and Luke Moss shot through Goodwin’s legs. Kelsey Trotter was at the rescue shortly afterwards also when a last ditch challenge prevented Keeble to get a shot on goal and Goodwin saved well to his right in another quick fire counter attack. At the other end, Horner had a shot straight at Butterworth. As the half went on both teams used all their substitutes, but this didn’t really alter the game for either side. Winter had a cracking chance to equalize but his shot was well smothered by Butterworth who was playing well in the away goal. From here on in chances were limited from either side as both defences were on top. The referee finally blew his whistle after nearly six minutes of added on time to condemn Leiston to a first defeat of the season.
