Reserves in a Winter Wonderland

The Reserves cemented their fifth place spot with a comfortable win over fourteenth placed Downham Town at Victory Road. Glen Driver's side recorded an impressive fourth successive victory and even more impressively, a fourth successive clean sheet. Set up in an attacking 4-3-3 formation the hosts took the lead after just six minutes. Tom Winter the creator, taking his time and holding off challenges before teeing up Toby Kerslake to side foot home from six yards. The lead was almost undone within two minutes. A neat pass from James Dougal inside Tom Mansfield released Walker but he flashed his shot across the face of the Blues goal. Attacking the Fairground End and with the wind advantage the Reserves began to dictate the pace and Brooks made a fine save from Kevin Inglis free kick after Sykes had felled Tom Winter. The home pressure brought a second goal on 21 minutes and again Tom Winter was involved. He burst clear to draw the final defender to release Aaron Thurlow but Sykes made a fine saving tackle at the expense of a corner. From the resulting corner Tom Winter had time to pick his spot and send a fine curling effort high into the right hand corner. Two goals down the visitors remained a threat and Dickson headed wide from a corner and then poked over the bar from a Merrishaw cross shot. Eight minutes before the interval Leiston added a third goal with Tom Winter grabbing his second of the match. Racing onto a Jack Baker pass before rounding Brooks and rolling the ball into the empty net. The second period lacked the neat build up of the opening half or the goal mouth action to excite the crowd. What unravelled was an even second half with neither side forcing either keeper into action until the closing embers of the game. A spate of substitutions broke up play and the first real effort of the half came on 72 minutes, Walker creating space in the Leiston box before stinging the hands of Jack Spurling. As the clock reached ninety minutes Leiston added a fourth with Man of the Match Tom Winter claiming the goal and his hat-rick. Inside the Downham box he held off the challenge of Dickson before driving his shot low into the bottom right hand corner. The match ended with a long range effort from James Dougal that was tipped over the bar by Jack Spurling.
