Reserves off the mark for the season with first win

The Reserves were looking for their first victory of the season with the visit of near neighbours and newly promoted Framlingham Town writes Craig Cooper. On a lovely evening for football, with the sun beaming down and the pitch in pristine condition, it certainly suited both sides to play football on the deck. Leiston, attacking the Estate End first half, had a chance early on when Aaron Thurlow got down the left flank but his shot was well gathered by ex Leiston goalkeeper Gary Rose. Leiston were playing some decent stuff and Rose was alert to push away a shot from outside the area. Charlie Beckwith dealt with a shot that was going inside his near post and after doing well to get in front of Johnson and Mayhew, Armani Schaar couldn’t lob his effort home. Patrick Brothers was busy in midfield but Framlingham were defending well and nearly took the lead before half time. A good run and cross into the area was met well by Kerridge but Charlie Beckwith got down well and Patrick Brothers cleared the danger. Leiston ended the half with some half chances. Christy Finch firing just wide and then a pair of Tom Winter efforts cleared Rose' goal.

The second half saw the hosts press Framlingham back and their passing was a lot more accurate. However, credit must go to the away side as they were keeping a good shape and not giving Leiston no clear opportunities. The first real chance of the second half came when Tom Winter, Aaron Thurlow and Christy Finch exchanged well, with Tom Winter lifting the ball over Rose but also over the bar. Rose then had to make a couple of fine saves, before the opening goal of the night came on 69 minutes. Again, decent play just outside the penalty area ended up with Christy Finch hitting a left foot shot into the keeper’s left hand corner. Rose then did well to push the ball over the bar after a shot had taken a deflection. With the clock ticking down, changes in personal were made on both sides but it didn’t affect the flow of the game. Taylor Hastings, who had looked very good at centre back all evening, smashed a shot that struck the crossbar from a good 30 yards. The game was finally put to bed when Tom Winter, who had been lively all second half, smashed in on the diagonal to beat Rose’s outstretched dive. Leiston then saw the game out and were deserved winners. They will be looking to improve on this win on Saturday when they welcome Cornard United to Victory Road.
