All square at Victory Road

The Reserves extended their unbeaten run to seven games, coming from behind to share the points with AFC Sudbury Reserves. Leading scorer Will Davies fired the hosts into the lead but Buckles equalised on 20 minutes. Early in the second half the visitors took the lead through Grimwood but with 13 minutes remaining James Gaffer netted to earn the Reserves a point.

The spectators at Victory Road were treated to a great contest between two good footballing sides on a miserable afternoon weather wise. The Reserves, who were buoyant thanks to six victories on the bounce, were on the back foot for the first five minutes as Harry Lay-Fulcher denied Kie Dyer from close range. Leiston took the lead as early on as the eighth minute. Will Davies picked the ball up on the right flank and cut inside to unleash a great strike into Charlie McCarthy's top left hand corner. A free kick from a long way out was sent into the area by Sudbury and centre back Josh Buckles headed in, with the ball taking a slight deflection. The Blues were still playing good football though and Josh Moore shot just over McCarthy's crossbar. Jac Garrard had a headed chance he put wide, while Nicky Shopov got forward from the back to drive down the left wing and pass to Will Davies but his attempt was deflected over the bar. Sudbury cleared the resultant corner, however, from the delivery back in by Leiston Toby Groom headed against the bar. Kie Dyer had the last chance of the half, with Harry Lay-Fulcher saving well in the home goal.

The visitors took the lead in the first 50 seconds of the second period when a corner kick was met at the near post and headed in by away captain Joe Grimwood and gave Lay-Fulcher no chance. The rain was then falling hard, but this didn't detract from the good football by both teams. Harrison Bacon and Josh Moore both had efforts, before the Reserves did have the ball in the back of the net but it was offside. Isaac Skubich intercepted Tom Mansfield at the back but put his shot wide of the target. Sub Nathan Read and Kie Dyer failed to test Harry Lay-Fulcher after both were presented with good opportunities, but it was Leiston who scored the next goal. Toby Groom's run saw him put in Harrison Bacon but he was denied by an excellent Charlie McCarthy save, before the cross back in was met by the head of James Gaffer which looped into McCarthy's bottom right hand corner. With ninety seconds of normal time remaining, Leiston had an excellent chance to win it as Will Davies shot was fumbled by McCarthy but Josh Moore somehow put the ball wide. Ollie Gravett then had a chance for Sudbury in added on time but Lay-Fulcher got down well to his right to keep the ball out.

In the end, a draw was a fair outcome with both teams not deserving to lose the match.

The Reserves now head to Wisbech St Mary next Saturday in league action for their next match.
