Leiston Reserves 3-1 Wisbech St Mary - Match Report
By Craig Cooper
Blues defeat lowly Wisbech St Mary at Victory Road
The Reserves won to move up a place to 13th in the league table after defeating Wisbech St Mary, who went bottom as a result of the defeat.
The Reserves started well and took the lead in just the 4th minute. A cross in from the right flank was met by Louis Bloom and he headed in past the unfortunate Sarunas Snitkas, who let the ball squirm under his body. Jourdan Kiwomya was in on goal a minute later but couldn’t get a good strike on the ball and Wisbech cleared. Wisbech’s first chance came when they got behind the Leiston defence but Scott Waumsley volleyed just wide of Joe Potter’s left hand post. From a Blues corner, Charlie Canham looped a header just wide of Snitkas’ upright. The Reserves broke away to create another good oppurtunity moments later, with Mason Sinclair going on a good run down the right and he crossed to Nikki Shopov who hit just off target. Leiston had other half chances, but the away side nearly levelled as miscommunication in the home defence let in Jordan Boriel who put the ball just inches past Joe Potter’s post. The Reserves scored their second goal in the 39th minute. Mason Sinclair’s brilliant cross field ball found Owen Hammond and he controlled well to strike well into Snitkas’ bottom right hand corner.
Leiston made a slow start to the second period, having half chances but not really threatening. Wisbech, not creating too much themselves at this stage, were given a lifeline halfway through the half as James Gaffer conceded a penalty. Scott Waumsley stepped up to dispatch the spot kick low to debutant keeper Potter’s right hand side. Potter made two good saves from Aaron McKenna and one from scorer Waumsley as Wisbech tried for an equaliser. Great individual play by Louis Bloom enabled him to cross to Michael Carrigan but Snitkas saved well and the spinning ball was eventually cleared. Stuart Beckett headed away a dangerous Leiston corner and Kiwomya beat the offside trap but again Snitkas came to Wisbech’s rescue. Bloom was denied from the keeper as he jinxed round the visiting defence, but in the second minute of time added on, sub Oliver Seymour dribbled to the edge of the area and released a great shot that found Snitkas’ top left hand corner to seal the points.
The Reserves visit Swaffham Town next Saturday in the Thurlow Nunn First Division North.
