Leiston in last-chance saloon as regards the play-offs, with nothing less than three wins the target

'They are a big club, have had some great attendances at their place this season, 3,000 plus.'
- Chris Wigger on Halesowen

LEISTON head into the Easter period in last-chance saloon territory with their play-off hopes hanging by a thread.

Two league wins in their last nine Southern League Central Premier division matches have seen the Blues drop to ninth in the table, six points off the final play-off place, meaning nothing less than three wins and a host of other results going their way will see Chris Wigger’s side into that play-off picture.

BLUES COACH STEPS DOWN....

However, this Saturday’s opponents at the Watson & Hillhouse Stadium, (3pm ko), Halesowen Town, are very much in the hunt, sitting fourth in the table, in what should be a mouth-watering clash with both teams desperate for the three points.

“Both us and Halesowen want the win, and we very much know what we will be facing,” Wigger said.

“They are a big club, have had some great attendances at their place this season, 3,000 plus, which is fantastic. So, we know it will be a tough fixture against a good side.”

Leiston drew 1-1 earlier in the season in the west Midlands, Kyran Clements’ late goal grabbing the Blues a point. There were more than 1,200 fans in the ground that afternoon and Wigger knows how the Leiston fans can play their part this weekend.

“Our fans continue to be fantastic,” he said.

“We’ve tried to give them something to shout about from the first match to the last. Nothing is over yet, but of course our chances of making the play-offs are reliant on other teams having a bit of a nightmare. We’ll see.”

Meanwhile, defender Wyatt Hill said his team will need to go toe-to-toe with Halesowen.

“They will be coming to win, make no mistake about that, and we will need to stand up and match them.

“We want to make sure we don’t let the season fizzle out. I know there is only three league games left in the regular season, but we want to win them all.”

After Saturday’s clash, the Blues travel to Lowestoft Town on Easter Monday (3pm ko), before entertaining already-relegated Biggleswade Town at Victory Road next Saturday (26th).
