Adam Mills: The way I play; on-field relationships; the future ahead

Blues winger opens up about his life at Leiston and why he wears his heart on his sleeve

'I’d like to stay next season at Leiston, of course I would. I really do enjoy it here'
- Adam Mills

ADAM Mills always plays with his heart on his sleeve.

It’s an endearing feature about the left-footed flying machine who continues to offer so much to Leiston in this, his second spell at the club.

And the 28-year-old, who has shown great versatility this campaign, playing in defence, midfield and attack, netting eight goals for far the Blues this season, and 32 in total during his two spells, says he simply can’t play any other way.

“If I’m playing badly, I’ll still run about hard. It’s in my nature. I don’t know any different,” he said.

“I’m more laid back off the pitch, quieter, and perhaps, yes, a different person. But on the pitch, it all means so much to me to win.”

Adam is glad he returned to the Flannery Stadium.

“I came back to Leiston with a little less than half the season still to go last year,” he said.

“I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it the first time. I only left to play higher (at Chelmsford City). So, there really isn’t any place I’d rather be.

“I know the gaffer and the coaches well. We did okay at the end of last season and we started off well this season, but we’ve had too many draws recently. It’s sort of killed our momentum a bit.

“It will be disappointing if we don’t make the play-offs. I think the manager has said we’ve perhaps over-achieved a bit this year, with new young players coming in, but you always want to be up there and we will keep pushing.”

Down the left-hand side for the Blues, Adam links up well with captain Seb Dunbar. It’s a relationship he knows is a good one.

“Yes, I have a great relationship with Seb down the left,” said Adam, who works in construction doing ground works. “I did so the first time I was here. I understand his game, he understands mine. We link up well.”

But it’s Mills’ never-say-die attitude on the pitch, that combative approach, not accepting second best, having plenty to say, that so makes him a fans’ favourite.

So, what about the future?

“I’d like to stay next season at Leiston, of course I would. I really do enjoy it here. A few chats have already been had, we’ll see. Hopefully the Club will want me!”
