Game 5/42.
The Blues visit Basford United this weekend in their fifth league match of the campaign, a side they have never played before in their history. It’s the third time they have played their first ever game against a new team this season as Leiston have also played Ilkeston Town and Mickleover so far. Basford have won one, drawn one and lost two of their four league games so far and sit in 15th place in the early league table. Leiston have netted nine league goals to date and have Will Davies in form as the striker has scored four goals in four so far.
Basford were formed in 1900 and for their early years played in the Notts Alliance League. They won numerous County Cups and they won the league in 1907 and 1920. In 2011 they moved into South Division of the Midlands league and won the title at their first attempt in 2012 and thus won promotion to the East Midlands Counties League. They also won the league’s floodlight Trophy. In the 2012-2013 season, Basford were victorious again winning the league and were promoted to the Northern Counties East League. In 2015-2016, they were reached the play-offs after finishing fourth , but they lost to Coalville Town in the play-offs.
Records: -
FA Cup: - Third Round Qualifying 2017-2018, 2021-2022.
FA Trophy: - First Round 2018-2019.
Record attendance: - 3,500 against Grantham Town in 1937.
Blues joint boss Chris Wigger said on Thursday: -
“If you offered me two home wins and two away draws at the start of the season, I feel I would have bitten your hand off. Yet now we sit here with those results on the board I feel a bit disappointed. The performances on the other hand have been very pleasing so I’ll take that. Saturday’s trip to Basford brings an unknown but we know that they are a powerful side that can definitely score goals. I will make sure that we approach this game with that in mind and hope that we can return to Leiston with our first away win”.
