Video of last-minute equaliser goes viral

'I just saw the ball there and thought, why not?'
- Billy Johnson

IT may have eventually all been in vain as regards the outcome of the game, but Billy Johnson's 94th-minute equaliser against Felixstowe & Walton on Wednesday night, has made big headlines... and put him, and the Blues, firmly in the national spotlight!

Billy came up for a corner late on in the Suffolk Premier Cup final at Needham Market with the score at 2-1 to Felixstowe. And while 'keepers often come up for corners late on, few, if any, have scored similar to the sensational scissor-kick finish Billy pulled off. It was his first-ever senior goal.

And it was captured by more than a few people on video... seeing his goal go viral, including Non-League Wonders @NLW-UK

Match of the Day X account @BBCMOTD (3.3 million followers) and Sky Sports Football X account @SkyFootball (2 million) both put out the clip on their socials. It has been viewed by hundreds of thousands of people around the world.

Local news outlets like the EADT and Suffolk Free Press were also on the case wanting to share the footage and create a story.

Speaking to the Suffolk News Billy said: "To be honest I've gone up for a couple this season and got close, but I wasn't expecting what was about to happen next.

"It's been a thing of mine for a while; acrobatic aerial goals. When I was at Stevenage I hit one in the warm up that did the rounds online, but I never thought I'd do it during a game.

"I just saw the ball there and thought, why not? I'm just gutted we couldn't finish the game winning penalties. But that's football."

Of course, it wasn't the dream ending, with Felixstowe taking the Cup on penalties. But it's been nice for Leiston and Billy to be in the national spotlight.

So, if the Blues are 1-1 on Saturday at Stourbridge with a minute to go and Leiston get a corner... I'll leave you to fill in the blanks!
