Blues skipper Seb knows play-offs are within reach

Dunbar delight to be back as he calls on Blues to be ruthless

'I was delighted to be back with the boys and get that win as well.'
- Seb Dunbar

LEISTON club captain Seb Dunbar has said if the Blues can be ruthless enough, the play-offs are well within reach.

Dunbar, 32, was back in the starting XI against second-placed Stratford Town on Saturday in the Southern League Premier Central, as Leiston produced an excellent performance to beat the Warwickshire side 1-0; Jamar Loza netting the winner.

It was no more than the Suffolk side deserved, but Dunbar knows if the play-offs are going to be reached, the team must take their chances and kill games off.

“The win over Stratford was good,” Dunbar said. "We dominated most of the game. In the second half they had a spell, but we had non-stop chances, missed a couple of sitters and just in general, the play from the back, midfield and up top was top drawer. Everyone had a good game.

“We played against a team who are second in the table, and we know we can beat anyone in this league. We have the players; we have the squad, and I feel we’re not scared of anyone. It’s just about being consistent and keeping that consistency.

“We’re only five points off second, well within reach. But we need to make sure we’re taking our chances and killing games off, because if you don’t, you can get punished.

“Against Royston on New Year’s Day, we played well. But just one chance and a team can nick a draw, that’s what happened. We need to be more clinical, more ruthless and we’ll get to the play-offs.”

Dunbar has been out injured for much of this campaign. For a player who has clocked up more than 400 appearances for the Blues, he’s been a big miss. So, it was nice for Leiston fans, players and management to have him back on Saturday.

“It felt really good to be back on the pitch,” Dunbar said. “I’ve been wanting to play for a long time, and it’s been a long road. A lot of work has gone in for me to get back fit.

“So, yes, I was delighted to be back with the boys and get that win as well. Confidence is high. It was nice to come back into a team where the boys are playing some good stuff.

“I’ve been watching a lot of the games, and I feel we’ve been very dominant and creating chances, as well as defending well. But we must keep a level head, keep putting results together and grinding out results.”

On Saturday the Blues, currently eighth in the table, entertain St Ives Town at the Watson & Hillhouse Stadium, hoping to edge ever closer to those play-off places.
