Leiston consolidate their second place in the table with back-to-back away wins

'We show character, we respond to adversity.'
- Darren Eadie

Leiston joint first-team manager Darren Eadie heaped praise on his side after back-to-back away wins over Bedford Town on Saturday and Barwell on Monday night.

The Blues consolidated their second in the table place with a thrilling 4-3 win at Bedford and then a fine 3-2 win at Barwell.

Two away days, two long trips and six points means Leiston are in a great position in the Southern League Central Division table.

Speaking after the Barwell win on Monday, Eadie said: “I’m delighted for the boys and have admiration for them for stepping up to the plate again.

“It’s tough, Saturday and Monday games and some at Barwell were trying to get in our boys’ heads saying how difficult travelling Saturday then Monday games must be.

“But we seem to produce the goods when up against it.

“Again we made it a bit difficult for ourselves going behind, but we show character, we respond to adversity.”

Leiston are just three points behind leaders Tamworth in the table with two games in hand. The winners of the league go up automatically, the next four into the play-offs.

Currently, Leiston are 20 points ahead of sixth-placed Hitchin who sit just outside those play-off places.

“We always had a target at the start of the season to aim for, to go a step further than last year and get into the play-offs,” Eadie added.

“That’s still very much our focus.

“We don’t believe we’re the best team in the league but we are a very good team, with a great group of players and we continue to pile pressure on those around and above us.

“The Southern League website often makes a point of saying we are not going away. And they are right. But we’re happy to be underdogs. We understand that.”

Meanwhile, Leiston entertain Alvechurch at Victory Road on Saturday. Alvechurch currently sit in the relegation positions, but play Mickleover tonight (Tuesday). They also have lots of games in hand on teams above them after an excellent FA Cup run saw them reach the second round, where they were beaten by League One Forest Green Rovers, 2-1.
