‘Eyes on the prize’: Wigger sets his stall out for AFC Sudbury test

Blues boss says he's getting 'fed up' of not winning anything

'I am getting fed up with not winning anything, so I want us to book a cup final place.'
- Chris Wigger

BLUES boss Chris Wigger has said it will be 'all eyes on the prize' tonight, as Leiston travel to Felixstowe & Walton to play AFC Sudbury in the semi-finals of the Endeavour Automotive Suffolk Premier Cup, 7.45pm kick-off.

Wigger led Leiston to the final of the 2021-22 competition, before losing 5-4 on penalties to Needham Market following a goalless draw at Colchester United FC. But as yet he hasn't managed silverware as Blues boss.

Speaking after his side’s 2-1 win at AFC Sudbury in Southern League Premier Central on Saturday, Wigger told the Suffolk FA website: “In my time here we have either fallen at this stage in the semis or we have got to the final and never quite done it.

“I have just had a conversation with the boys in the dressing room to tell them that we haven’t competed anywhere near to our potential at any time we have been at this stage of the competition.

“We need to break that, and I am getting fed up with not winning anything, so I want us to book a cup final place. There are people at the club who deserve it much more than me, so we will definitely be all eyes on the prize on Tuesday night.”

Wigger has warned his players not to get too far ahead of themselves now that Needham have been knocked out.

“That was a fantastic performance from Felixstowe last week. Let’s be really honest about it – Needham have dominated this competition over the last few years, and we have had to stand and watch that.

“They have been removed from the competition by Felixstowe, but we have now got to make sure that we concentrate on the task in hand, which is Tuesday night against AFC Sudbury,” he said.

The Blues will be without Adam Mills, who recently re-joined the club from Needham Market and is cup-tied after appearing for the Marketmen earlier in this season’s competition.

Wigger is hoping that skipper Seb Dunbar, who picked up a foot injury on Saturday, will be fit to take his place in defence.

As for the prospect of playing the same opposition twice in the space of three days, Wigger said: “Back-to-back games are never easy.

“I have kept a few things up my sleeve. We have got options with regards to formation and players to come in because you don’t want to play the same way against the same team two games on the bounce.”
