LEISTON midfielder, Fraser Alexander, says the team need to focus on themselves, and that the play-offs are still very much in their sights.
Alexander was speaking after a frustrating few days for the Victory Road team that saw them lose 3-4 at home to Barwell on Saturday and then draw 0-0 at Biggleswade Town on Tuesday night – both opponents in the bottom five in the Southern League Premier Central table.
It means Leiston, now in eighth, are five points adrift of the play-offs with seven games remaining. This weekend they travel to mid-table Alvechurch.
“We need to put the Biggleswade result behind us and kick on,” Alexander said.
“Alvechurch is going to be a tough game, it’s a tough place to go, we know that, but we’re five points off the play-offs. A good result at the weekend will put us back in a really good position and that’s what we’re looking forward to.
“The result at Biggleswade puts the pressure on Saturday and every game going forward to get three points to get into the play-offs, we know that. But we’re still in touching distance 100%, and the boys know it. And the boys know there is a massive opportunity for us.”
BLUES ANNOUNCE NEW PARTNERSHIP
And Alexander says the team need to stay focused and not let their recent disappointments worry them.
“It’s all about focusing on us and whether we’re good enough on the day to outperform teams, outplay teams, outfight teams,” Alexander continued. “Because that is ultimately what is going to determine who comes away with the points at this stage of the season.
“We were understandably a bit disappointed and frustrated with the result at Biggleswade.
"We put up a good defensive performance. We were tested in a way that we haven’t really been tested so far this season. Biggleswade were very direct, they had some big strong, fast players up front that pushed and stretched our back line.
“But we felt we created enough opportunities and got in enough good areas to score enough goals to get the three points rather than come away with a 0-0 draw.”
Leiston still have some big games to come, especially at home, where current second-placed Halesowen Town and fourth-placed Bedford Town are still to visit Suffolk.
“I haven’t really looked at the run-in to the play-offs, and I don’t think the boys are too concerned who we’re playing because we know on our day, we are good enough to beat anyone,” Alexander added.
