HOT topic in non-league world this week is the National League campaigning three promoted, three relegated to/from the Football League.
Us of an older persuasion will remember how many years ago, every season members of the Football League would vote on whether the side finishing at the foot of the Fourth Division (yes, leagues were called Division One to Four in those days, ridiculous, I know), should remain as members of the Football League, or should the champions of the Gola League (that was honestly its name, a similar level to the National League today), get promoted.
You won’t be surprised to know the Football League side rarely went down!
In the late '70s and early '80s, Leiston also went to member votes in the Ipswich & District/Suffolk & Ipswich League after finishing bottom of the Senior Division. Yes, we faced the chop!
Fortunately, we were saved a couple of times by our then fellow Senior clubs, but weren’t so lucky in 1982 and Leiston were relegated to junior football... How shocking is that? Still, we've rather shown them since, don't you agree?
Enough of my gloating and back to the matter in hand.
Personally, I think it’s time for change giving all sides at Step One a fair shot of promotion, but surely the National League campaign should also include its member clubs in the North and South in this proposal.
Well, on another subject, it was certainly Roy of the Rovers stuff at Victory Road last Saturday.
For the younger viewers, Roy of the Rovers was a footy comic back in the good ol days showcasing the excellent Roy Race of Melchester Rovers and his journey through the football leagues.
Last week, Blues normal keeper Billy Johnson handled outside the box and off he trundled for an early bath or rather shower as we have today. But who would don the gloves? Step forward Leiston’s very own 'Roy of the Rovers' or should it have been ‘safest hands in football’ Gordon Stewart (another feature in the Roy of the Rovers comic) Kyran Clements, he of the goal scoring prowess over the last few weeks.
Yes, from goal scorer to shot stopper he repelled all of Redditch’s advances for nearly an hour and a half as he collected a clean sheet and man of the match award as the Blues bagged a huge three points.
Question is, does he keep his place in goal at Stamford?
Right, talking of Stamford…train tickets booked, hotel booked, match tickets booked. But hang on Houston, we have a problem. We haven't sorted how we get to Saxmundham to start the weekend. If only Tik Tok had a car, or Leiston had a railway station.
Let’s hope for the latter real soon!
