LEISTON boss Chris Wigger admits it has been a ‘tricky few weeks' for his side, but he is looking forward to the rest of the season with relish.
One win in seven Southern League Premier Central games has seen Leiston’s hopes of the play-offs now reliant as much on other teams’ results as their own.
However, with a Suffolk Premier Cup final to come next week against Felixstowe & Walton, as well as a home clash with Banbury at Victory Road on Saturday, where a win will keep those play-off hopes intact, Wigger remains more than upbeat.
“It’s been a tricky few weeks for us regarding results, I’m not going to lie,” Wigger, who is looking for his first piece of silverware with Leiston on Wednesday night in the Premier Cup final, said.
“I don’t think performances have been particularly poor, but we let ourselves down by not taking more points in the recent back-to-back Barwell and Biggleswade games.
“If you just look at what would have happened if we had secured more points on the board in those two games, it would put us in a much more competitive place for the play-offs.
“But I think we must be realistic that we’re in a situation now where we’re relying on other things in the league, and our focus needs to be on the Suffolk Premier Cup final next week.
“So, yes coming to the end of the season it’s still exciting. There are play-offs to chase but realistically it’s all about the Premier Cup final now for us.”

Banbury come to the Watson & Hillhouse Stadium with their Step 3 future as good as assured. They sit just a couple of places below ninth-placed Leiston in the table and are on a good run of form with just one defeat in their last eight games, including a 2-5 victory at Lowestoft Town on Tuesday night.
“Banbury always give us a good game and they are proving hard to beat right now,” Wigger said. “But we’re confident in ourselves. As I said, our performances have not been bad.”
