Location, location, location... If only we all collected air miles!

Location, location, location... If only we all collected air miles!

Dunne's Pit21 Feb - 15:00

The talk on the terraces this week has centred around the trip to AFC Telford, as well as remembering the great ex-Leiston player, Ted Phillips.

THERE was nothing I enjoyed more than reading my local paper. Up to date footie results and good old local news.

Nowadays, of course, we have to trawl through what’s called the World Wide Web to find our news. Sadly, I used to struggle with the old 'snake game' on my Nokia phone (others brands were/are available), so you see my dilemma these days!

Thankfully, we have our local libraries (wonderful things). And there the other day, I read of another promising footballer in the region having the opportunity in the Football League. Good for him.

Now, I can’t seem to recall this happening very often, if at all, at Leiston despite a plethora of super talent over the years.

I think it has to be the location because Leiston FC has been one of top non-league clubs in the region for many years, so it's incredible the last really local lad (born in Gromford, near Snape, and played for Leiston) to make the jump to pro football was the great Ted Phillips.... And that was more than 70 years ago.

Ted was a gardener in Tunstall, near Woodbridge, when Ipswich Town came calling, initially turning down the Tractor Boys because he could earn more gardening! Wow! Now, I know Tik Tok has a gardener, and there is no way the guy who trims Tik Tok's Camellia's earns more than Mo Salah or Jack Grealish... I'm 100% on that. How times have changed.

Anyhow, back to Ted. When he did eventually sign for Ipswich he was a very prominent part of the club that won the Division One title in 1961/62 scoring 28 goals. An Ipswich Town legend.

Now, I suggest there is plenty more talent waiting for the opportunity here at Leiston FC. Folks really should come and take a look, don’t be put off by the distance....

.... Staying with distances, this weekend the Leiston lads and lasses head to Shropshire, their longest away journey (203 miles) as they face AFC Telford United.

By the time they return to Leiston in the early hours of Sunday morning (only kidding) they will have racked up more than 4,300 miles so far from their 16 away league games to date. Shame they couldn’t claim air miles!

Don't you think that is both incredible, amazing and ridiculous all at the same time.

The conception of a new Step 3 league a few seasons ago has clearly benefited Midland clubs and those bordering the Midland counties of Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

Why or why not create an Eastern league that includes Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and parts of Essex and Hertfordshire? It would cut down on travelling, reduce clubs' costs and, in these eco-friendly times, reduce carbon footprint. What's not to like?

All it needs now is for more Norfolk and Suffolk clubs to get themselves promoted!
