Marriott looking to make more FA Cup memories

Adam cherishes his already good times in the competition

'If we could get Leiston to the First Round it would be a brilliant achievement. There are so many good people and fans at the Club.'
- Adam Marriott

WHEN it comes to the FA Cup, Leiston striker, Adam Marriott, already has memories he cherishes. And he is looking to make more, starting this Saturday.

Leiston entertain Leeds-based, Guiseley, in the 4th Round Qualifying at the Flannery Stadium this weekend (3pm ko) – both teams now one round away from the First Round Proper.

Marriott, 35, was part of a National League Lincoln City squad that historically made their way into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in the 2016/17 season, the first non-league side at the time to reach the last eight in 103 years.

On their way to eventual defeat at the Emirates, where Arsenal beat them 5-0, the Imps beat Premier League Burnley, Championship high-fliers at the time, Brighton & Hove Albion, and of course, one to forget for Ipswich Town fans, Mick McCarthy’s team in the third round.

Indeed, it was Marriott who helped break Ipswich Town hearts that January night in front of the BBC TV cameras, setting up Nathan Arnold for his injury-time winner. It was a night and an FA Cup run, Marriott has never forgotten.

“Certainly, the Ipswich game was the best moment for me on a football pitch,” Marriott said.

“Ipswich were a good side, and we held our own at Portman Road before winning at home. And yes, in front of the TV cameras as well.”

That wasn’t the end of Marriott’s involvement in the FA Cup, as Lincoln saw off Brighton and Burnley before losing to Arsenal.

“I was on the bench for the Brighton and Burnley games,” Marriott said. “But I came on for the final 20 minutes at the Emirates against Arsenal. It was another amazing moment for me and my family.”

So, does Marriott still have the same buzz for the competition today, as he did almost 10 years ago with Lincoln? You bet he does.

“I am really excited for Saturday and the Guiseley game,” he said.

“If we could get Leiston to the First Round it would be a brilliant achievement. There are so many good people and fans at the Club, and they deserve a moment like this.”

The Blues head into the game after wins over Grays, Hitchin Town and Coventry United in previous rounds.

And they have a decent FA Cup record. Two seasons ago, they reached the 4th Round Qualifying when they entertained National League Dagenham & Redbridge, losing 1-5.

Back in 2008 they reached the First Round proper, where they lost to Fleetwood Town, after a replay.
