Mike Bacon looks ahead to an exciting April at Victory Road and also reflects on an England gem.

'Hold onto your corner flags! It’s going to be quite a month'

YOU need to be in it to win it!

Well, at Leiston, Chris Wigger and Darren Eadie’s side are very much ‘in it’ and April has all the potential to be a cracker for the Blues.

In just four weeks and five league games, the Blues will know their fate as regards the play-off picture. Will it be a home draw? Who will it be against? Will there have been a host of twists, and Leiston finish top - heading to Step 2?

Plus, there is the little matter of a Suffolk Premier Cup semi-final against Needham Market. It’s one heck of a month ahead.

At the start of pre-season back in June, it’s the sort of end to the season the management team here at Victory Road would have dreamt of the first team being in a position of. It’s the sort of finish all team managers dream of.

So, now what do Leiston face?

Well, on Saturday there really is an explosive test on the way as Rushall Olympic come to Victory Road.

I’ve been told there was a few niggly moments up at Rushall in the reverse fixture in December where Leiston won 2-0.

Not suggesting there will be any bad feeling on Saturday, but quite frankly with both teams desperate for points – Rushall are currently fourth, Leiston third – it’s going to be an excellent competitive fixture.

With Barwell and Hednesford also to come to Victory Road this month, plus a trip to leaders Tamworth and a double-header league and Suffolk Premier Cup clash with neighbours Needham Market – wow! What a finale.

So, hold onto your corner flags! It’s going to be quite a month.

I quite enjoyed watching England beat Italy last weekend.

Well, I say enjoyed. I often find England games, especially qualifiers, a tad like pulling teeth out at times. However, the first half in Italy was a good one – and a good result t’boot.

How wonderful it is to see Jude Bellingham gliding over the pitch. What a player he is and will be. He’s only 19 years old! What a future he has.

And I’m pretty sure there are a few people who will have to now likely swallow their ‘guffaws’ having giggled at Birmingham City’s decision to ‘retire’ the number 22 shirt at the club after Bellingham, as a 17-year-old, left for Borussia Dortmund.

The Brummies said at the time of his £20m+ move to Germany that they were retiring the shirt and it was ‘fitting’ for a player whom they hoped would go on to achieve great things.

Many laughed, saying it was a bit ‘over the top’.

Not so sure they’re laughing now!
