Terrace Talk: Oil leaks and goal leaks. Blink and you missed it

Terrace Talk: Oil leaks and goal leaks. Blink and you missed it

The life of a Leiston fan is never dull!

THERE’S never a dull moment when following non-league football.

Tick-Tock and I opted against the barge form of travel to Market Harborough last weekend, opting instead for the good old-fashioned car.

Nowadays every journey seems a long one and Leiston to Market Harborough felt like a long old journey, it certainly was on the way home, not helped by me having to top up on oil when a warning light flashed on!

For an hour last Saturday, we were on cloud nine. Then within the blink of an eye the electronic scoreboard changed Harborough’s total from a 1 to a 3 and Leiston let go of the three points.

Tick-Tock was grumpy, not helped by being one number out on the draw, although he claims the can of coke he had in the clubhouse was the best he’d ever tasted… I didn’t bother asking why.

We had planned a mini picnic for the way home but neither of us were in the mood for a stale sandwich or two and a luke-warm flask of tea as we headed back east.

As we trundled down the A14 the sight of the Bury St Edmunds signpost cheered Tick Tock up as he’s never been to Bury, and that’s our next away destination after this weekend’s home clash with Royston.

You never have long to dwell on a defeat before the next game appears, so let’s hope there aren’t too many defeats until the end of the season.

ON Monday the winter transfer window will close.

Millions upon millions will have been spent and fans up and down the country and around Europe will either be happy or disappointed.

Will there be panic buys? Will the TV cameras track a player wanting a move? Either way, it’s great viewing.

But how on earth did we manage when there were no windows? It’s 24 years now since the UK transfer window began and before that year, you could sign players up until the 31st March.

In some levels of non-league this is still the case. But I wonder, if the old rules still applied, would so much money be exchanged on transfer deadline day?

I suppose it certainly wouldn't be so exciting.
