The big 'W' in the bag... now bring on the champions!

Dunn's Pit27 Mar - 08:30

The talk on the terraces this week was the win over Worcester and the Champions League draw

WELL, finally we got to celebrate a big ‘W’ last Saturday.

To be honest I must agree with the Worcester manager because if Willie Clemons hadn’t grabbed that early clever goal, neither side looked like scoring. But hey, we don’t care, the three points are extremely welcome.

Tick Tock on the other hand cut a frustrated figure. I wasn’t sure if it was because he forgot to bring his sunglasses, yes, the sun was out, or whether the bloke next to him won the 50/50 half-time draw which annoyed him, but his mood was as spicy as Worcestershire sauce (which I enjoy on cheese on toast by the way).

Despite the win he remained gloomy the next day, but I did manage to improve his mood with a lovely local roast dinner on Sunday afternoon and a couple of glasses of ale (be rude not to!)

There are only a few weeks of the season remaining so we need to start enjoying the last few home games, I am sure they will all bring further wins, starting with Banbury this weekend.

We’ve also noticed that there is a new bakery opening in the town in a couple of weeks so our pre-match fare will be improved, there’s another big win right there!

+++++++

The last eight of the Champions League are now aligned and early April sees the games taking place.

We have Real Madrid, who finished third in their division, at home to the champions of Germany (Bayern Munich), while Premier League runners-up Arsenal travel to Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon.

The following night it’s an all-Spanish affair as Barcelona host Atletico Madrid, while French champions Paris St Germain host current Premier League champions Liverpool.

So, in a competition with the word ‘Champions’ as its main theme, three of the last eight are anything but!

I know it’s all about TV and money, but the good old days saw only champions qualify in a straight knock-out format from the outset.

I often think it’s unfair why certain countries’ champions must go through a couple of qualifying rounds, yet a team finishing fourth or fifth in some leagues automatically goes into the group stages.

I mean, clubs can only play what’s in front of them, cliched yes, but a fact.

Give me the ‘70s and ‘80s European Cup format any day of the week, quite literally!
