LEISTON boss Chris Wigger is looking forward to some positive news ahead of back-to-back Bank Holiday fixtures this weekend.

The Blues entertain Redditch United at the Flannery Stadium on Saturday (3pm ko), before heading to Ram Meadow for a local derby clash with Bury Town on Monday (3pm ko).

And Wigger hopes the nagging injuries that have hindered Leiston so far in this early start to the campaign are coming to an end.

Although the Blues have made a solid start to the season and sit in 10th position in the Southern League Premier Division Central after last Saturday's draw at Stourbridge. Wigger knows it has been a juggling act with his squad.

“It’s been a tough start to as regards to picking up injuries to key players in pre-season,” he said.

“We’d already lost Joao Rangel after his injury during international duty. We had expected him back for the start of the season, but he picked up a nasty knock.

“Add that to a broken toe for Cameron Rayworth, a broken rib for Adam Marriott and Noel Aitkens only now returning after a groin strain and it’s been a tad frustrating as a management team.

However, Wigger says he is relatively pleased with his side’s start to the campaign.

“I think we have come out of the first four games okay. I’d liked to have had a few more points on the board, but overall, we are kind of where I thought we might be. I’m looking forward to getting some of the injured players back. It will add to our firepower.”

Redditch just missed out on the play-offs last season and sit 15th in the early table this.

Leiston have only lost one of their first four games and picked up a good point at Stourbridge last week after a gruelling six-hour journey to get to the west Midlands, with Adam Mills and Eddie Jackson on target.

“Saturday will be a tough fixture,” said Wigger. “Redditch lost at home to Bromsgrove Sporting in a big local derby last Saturday, so they are going to be reeling a bit from that.

“But with the backing of our good support, we approach the game with confidence.”
