LEISTON boss Chris Wigger wants his side to begin to try and replicate their excellent away record and make the Flannery Stadium more of a fortress.
The Blues are back at home on Saturday, 3pm kick-off, where they entertain Bromsgrove Sporting at their Victory Road ground, the Blues fresh from another fine away-day win, this time at Barwell last Saturday.
That 3-2 victory at Barwell, courtesy of goals from Adam Mills, new signing Harvey Sayer and Willie Clemons, was Leiston’s sixth on the road this campaign. Indeed, the Blues have won more league games away from home, that at home.
Wigger has a theory as to why that maybe.
“We have done well on the road this season,” he said.
“Some people ask why that is. Well, I think it’s a bit of a mentality thing. The team realise that we take a faithful group of fans, but we are always outnumbered wherever we go. It’s sort of us and our small group of fans against the world mentality and it’s very much how the group approach the games.
“In saying that, games are now really starting to mean something for teams at both the bottom and top ends of the table. The recent home game against Royston highlighted that. They are scrapping for everything right now and they became another team to take a point away from the Flannery Stadium, despite their lowly position.
“But we need to start making Leiston a bit of a fortress to be honest. Too many teams have left with points this season, it was something our player/coach, Ryan Jarvis, picked up on last weekend. And he’s right.”
BRUCE Grobbelaar coming to Leiston
Leiston currently sit in eighth position in the Southern League Premier Division Central table, but it could have been far better had they put sides to bed at Victory Road.
Indeed, Leiston have drawn their last three games at home, all to sides struggling near the foot of the table.
And Bromsgrove Sporting, in 16th place, are another fighting the drop and will prove tough opposition.
