Youth Cup winner Kyle hopes today's Blues can create more memories

First team man Callan-McFadden recalls happy times as Under 18’s look forward to their big night

'I hope the current Leiston U18s can enjoy Tuesday night, get that win and make more memories.'
- Kyle Callan-McFadden

LEISTON defender Kyle Callan-McFadden has recalled his time at Norwich City when he helped their Under 18’s win the FA Youth Cup in 2013, beating Chelsea over two legs in the final.

The Blues are at home to Bromley at the Flannery Stadium on Tuesday night in the First Round of the competition with the winners set to entertain AFC Wimbledon in the Second Round. Should the young Blues win, it will be the furthest the Club has ever gone in the competition.

Recalling the time he won the FA Youth Cup with Norwich, Callan-McFadden said: “It was a great experience. As the Under 18’s were having big crowds at Carrow Road for every home game in the FA Youth Cup, it was brilliant."

“We didn’t enter until the Third Round and we beat QPR 1-0, we then went on to beat Millwall 2-1 in Round Four and then Birmingham 2-1 in the Fifth Round.”

Callan-McFadden, who has played more than 50 times for the Blues in all competitions, signed for Leiston in 2025 from King’s Lynn Town. He remembers how the Canaries' Youth Cup run began to get tougher.

“In the quarter-finals we got drawn against Everton away which was at Goodison Park" he said. "We won that game 4-2 and I think after that result the penny dropped with a lot of us and we thought we actually had a great chance of going far.”

“We drew Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals, which was played over two legs. We won the first leg 1-0 away from home, thanks to a late goal, but lost the second leg 1-0. The game went to penalties and we won 5-4 in front of nearly 10,000 fans at Carrow Road. I didn’t fancy taking a penalty though!”

And then came the final.

“It was Chelsea in the final which again was played over two legs also," Callan-McFadden added. "We beat them 1-0 at Carrow Road in front of 23,000.”

“Going to Stamford Bridge with a one goal advantage was good for us and taking 10,000 Norwich fans to an away Under 18 game was incredible! We knew Chelsea would come out and try play us off the pitch which they obviously had the players to do that but we knew how defensively solid we can and have been the whole campaign so we didn’t mind them having the ball.

"We won the second leg 3-2 (4-2 on aggregate). It was a wonderful experience. I just hope the current Leiston Under 18’s can enjoy Tuesday night, get that win and make more memories."
