Youths knocked out of FA Youth Cup

Leiston and Framlingham Town met for the second time in successive weeks this time at Badingham Road writes Craig Cooper. Leiston were hoping for another cup victory over Framlingham while our hosts were looking to gain some revenge from last weeks 2-1 defeat. After a tentative opening from both sides, Leiston fell behind when Max Willett got in behind the Leiston defence on nine minutes to coolly slot past Charlie Beckwith into the far corner. Leiston would gradually find their feet and they did start to play some neat football but were finding it hard to create any clear openings. Adam Blades did manage a shot on target but Goddard dide well to smother his shot and then shortly later, Blades had another effort, but this was straight at the home custodian. Harry Burman was then booked and after giving away another silly free-kick, the dangerous Willett headed against the crossbar with Beckwith saving the rebound well. Leiston would then have their best chance of the half just five minutes before the interval but Garrard’s header was just over from Dan Hanson’s centre. Framlingham ended the half with another chance but Beckwith made another good stop.

Leiston came out the blocks well after the break but conceded just four minutes into the half. Toby Groom looked to have kept the ball in play, but it was deemed a Framlingham throw by the linesman. Groom was then turned in the area and good play from the home winger left Godfrey to smash past Beckwith to double the hosts advantage. Hanson delivered a free-kick but the ball ricocheted in the box and out for a goal kick. Adam Blades and Dan Hanson then linked up well down the right and Hanson’s ball found sub Tommy Smith but his header was easily dealt with by Goddard. Framlingham would also have a couple of chances of their own but they were wide of the target. Yet again, another Hanson’s free-kick was met by Burman and Goddard produced a smart save to his right. The game was made harder in the 64th minute. The Referee had given a free-kick to the hosts and as there was a slight break in play, Jack Gissing would replace Joe Murphy. The Referee then from nowhere produced a straight red card for Harry Burman for verbal abuse. The situation had now become a lot harder. Tommy Spurling had Goddard diving to his right and Willett had a chance to seal the game but his effort was smashed over. Another Willett effort saw Beckwith clawing an attempt round his right hand post. A dangerous ball into the box wasn’t dealt with by the home defence but Hanson couldn’t put his shot in the net. With five minutes of normal time remaining Blades tried to take the ball round the final defender to put him through with Goddard, but it wasn’t to be, and Framlingham saw the last few moments of the game out comfortably.
