U18's progress in FA Youth Cup

The U18's visited Whitton United in the FA Youth Cup kicking off up the slope and Whitton were the dominant team in the first period.
The game as a whole got off to a tentative opening with both sides struggling to get a foothold on the game. Niholov had the first effort after he was put through on goal but Charlie Beckwith came out and spread himself well to save the day for Leiston. Moments later, Colver had a curling effort that Charlie Beckwith could only watch, but the crossbar this time saved Leiston. Swan was quick to get in behind the Leiston defence for the next oppurtunity, but Charlie Beckwith tacked him well. After Adam Chenery had given away a free kick on the edge of the box, Charlie Beckwith saved the resultant effort by palming the ball away. Cooper's header was also well handled by Beckwith as the match was heading towards the interval. In a rare Leiston attack, Joe Murphy took a quick free kick to set up Adam Blades, however, Whitton's Jimpson done well to clear over his own bar. Toby Groom took the corner that was met by the head of Toby Chenery but his attempt went wide of the target. In the last chance of note of the half, Adam Chenery shot high and wide.

Leiston were now going down the slope and they started the second half much better than the first, with Toby Groom seeing his effort going wide of the post. Mappleback had a cross that Charlie Beckwith did well to parry over for a corner. Leiston were now dictating the game and Toby Chenery headed just wide from a Toby Groom corner. A good move that combined Adam Blades, Toby Chenery and Carl Mayhew ended with Toby Chenery firing over. Leiston would take the lead in the 64th minute when Ben Snowling's ball into the area ended in a bit of a goalmouth scramble that ended with Toby Chenery putting the loose ball in Potter's left hand corner. Mappleback set up Swan for Whitton but Charlie Beckwith handled well. Leiston won a penalty when Charlie Beckwith's long kick set Toby Groom away and he was upended, with the Referee pointing to the spot. Adam Blades had his spot kick saved however from Potter. Five minutes later though and the Blues doubled their lead. Ben Snowling cut in from the right hand side to launch a thunderous effort that smashed the under side of the bar and went in. Whitton's Jimpson was shown a second yellow card for retaliation to a Groom foul as Leiston were keeping the ball well to see the match out. Both sides were also making their allotted substitutions allocated to them. Toby Groom had a shot blocked on the goal line, while Carl Bowers' goalward attempt was kept out by the legs of Potter. Charlie Beckwith did well to keep out a Stannard corner before the Referee blew for full time. Leiston will now play Mildenhall Town in the next round of the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday September 20, with a 7.45pm kick off.
