League leaders extend their unbeaten run with an early season 'double'

Playing their first match in the league away this season, Leiston made the trip across county to Walsham Le Willows looking to complete an early season double over them.

On a mild evening for football, Leiston made the quicker start. In fact, with the first significant chance of the match, Leiston scored in the sixth minute. After a foul was given on the edge of the area, Jac Garrard curled round the wall and into the bottom right hand corner to give Walsham captain Alex Johns no chance in the home goal. Soon after, Adam Blades struck from distance but it was easy for Johns this time as it was straight at him. Walsham had their first sight of goal moments later, but Toby Groom slid in well to win the ball off Kehan Whitby and clear the danger. The first yellow card of the match was shown when Lukas Darling was caught by Whitby near the byline. Leiston were passing the ball around nicely in the middle of the park and a good ball by Alfie Norman found Jamie Smith at the far post but he volleyed wide. Another set play on the right hand side saw a cross into the area by Alfie Norman met by Adam Blades but he headed wide. Ryan Stiff was then also booked for the hosts. Carl Mayhew's run down the left flank was met by Jamie Smith but his effort was wide of the target. Keham Whitby registered Walsham's first attempt on goal in the match but play switched and Leiston's next chance fell to Jamie Smith after good work by Lukas Darling but his turn and strike was deflected just wide of John's right hand post. For the remainder of the half, Leiston had good ball retention but there were to be no further oppurtunities and ultimately no more goals leading up to half time.

Leiston conceded a free kick outside the penalty area five minutes into the second period, but George Lilley's kick went over the crossbar. Hayden Ling was unlucky to be punished for yet another foul given by the referee in the match, however it was to come to nothing as Charlie Beckwith handled well. Leiston did work an opening when Carl Bowers won a tackle and then teed up Adam Blades who's right footed chance was saved by Alex Johns. Jac Garrard's run was squared to Carl Bowers but the Walsham defender blocked his shot. The resultant corner from Jac Garrard was headed onto the bar from substitute Toby Chenery, before Guy Blades did well from the rebound to fire just wide. A cross from Jac Garrard on the right hand side was grabbed by Johns at the second time of asking as the match was evenly in the balance. Walsham sub Jordan Asker's good little run and cross-cum-shot smacked the bar as time was running out for the home side. Toby Chenery headed a Jamie Smith delivery wide for Leiston, and Jake Seaber had a great effort from twenty yards which rattled a post, with Jamie Smith not being able to adjust to convert the follow up. Asker had a half volley as the match moved into injury time but Charlie Beckwith was there to prevent the danger and Beckwith palmed away another cross just seconds later. In the fourth minute of stoppages, Hayden Ling's volley on the angle of the box deceived the unfortunate John's and found his top right hand corner. In the last minute, Charlie Beckwith put a Toby Finbox strike round the post. The corner wasn't cleared by Leiston and Henry Walshe volleyed inches wide in what was the final kick of the match.
