Young Blues go down to good Walsham side

Leiston U18's fell to their first defeat in four games as they lost 3-0 to a good Walsham le Willows team. After beating Coplestonians twice and drawing at Felixstowe & Walton in their last three matches, this was a disappointing setback.

Matt Glover had an early attempt for Walsham, with his shot just clearing Brandon Ling's crossbar, but the hosts took the lead in the 7th minute. A corner drifted over from the right was not cleared and Joe Mower had the simplest of tasks to prod home the loose ball. Glover forced Brandon Ling into his first save just after, before Walsham were awarded a penalty, however, Jack Spampanato's spot kick hit Ling's left hand post. Walsham doubled their lead in the 15th minute as Ryan Stiff was found unmarked in the box and slided the ball under Ling. Ling made a super save from a Mower header after a delivery from the right hand side. Leiston's first chance came when Owen Pierce crossed to Isaac Page, who headed just over the bar. Another good move minutes later by Leiston saw good play between Pierce and Witness Mhango and they created a chance for Aaron McGuckin but he steered the ball past Dan Stobbart's left hand upright. In the final action of note of the half, Konnor Dixon went through the Leiston defence but Ling thwarted him with his feet.

Owen Pierce cut inside early on in the second period but he curled a good strike just over the bar. Josh Roberts failed to read a long ball form the back which let in Spampanato but he shot straight at Ling. Joe Mower's long dribble saw him hit the crossbar, while Spampanato found Ling in good form again with his strike. Walsham did make the game safe and scored a third when a free kick into the Leiston area was helped in by home captain Taylor Waterson. Sub Kehan Whitby was denied by Ling, before Leiston nearly scored a goal of their own but sub George Garrard hit the post after good individual play. Walsham defended well though and restricted Leiston to any further significant chances. Sub Ed Spampanato headed over and Ling kept out Jack Spampanato late on.

The Blues head to Framlingham Town on Thursday night in their final match of 2018.
