Young Blues defeat Ipswich Wanderers to win final away league match of the season

The U18’s beat Ipswich Wanderers U18’s in their final away match of the season. On a cold night, they ran out 3-0 winners albeit two goals came in the last ten minutes.

The match struggled to get going early on, and an injury to an Ipswich Wanderers player after five minutes delayed proceedings, with seven minutes of added on time at the end of the half coming as a result. Both defences were well on top and although both sides had a couple of corners in the twenty five minutes, nothing came of them. Josh Leggett turned his man inside the penalty area after half an hour to get a shot away but Callum Johnson saved well. A dangerous Owen Pierce free kick was put back into the area by Leggett but Wanderers cleared however the Blues persistence was rewarded in the 35th minute. Pierce’s free kick was floated into the area and Harry Eyre jumped highest to head past Johnson and in off the post to put Leiston in the lead. Pierce and Leggett went close before half time but they couldn’t add to the Blues’ tally.

Leiston came out well for the second half and Josh Leggett went through on goal after a good passing move but he sidefooted the ball past Johnson’s left hand upright. A ball over the home defence enabled Kai Fletcher to get in on goal but he was off target with his strike. Blake Clarke had a chance for the home side forcing Brandon Ling into his first save of the night, although it was a routine one. The Blues dominated possession without getting enough strikes away on goal but they did finish the contest in the 87th minute as Riley Mower finished at the second time of asking when he converted Kai Fletcher‘s delivery from the left. In the 94th minute, Lewis Wood, making his debut for the U18’s finished excellently to score his first goal.

The U18’s now don’t play until Thursday 18th April when they host Whitton United U18’s in their final game of the season.
