Leiston U18s progressed to the Suffolk Boys U18s Midweek Cup 2nd Round on Tuesday night after a 3-1 win over Bungay Town U18s, in front of an attendance of nearly 100.
Players from both sides took part in a minutes applause before the game in memory of Kaylem Scopes, who sadly passed away a few days ago. Kaylem played for one of the Blues EJA sides.
Everyone’s thoughts are with Kaylem’s family at this sad time.
The Blues went close three times in the opening ten minutes to opening the scoring. A shot went just wide while the Bungay Town keeper made two good saves also.
Andrei Cusca was just off target with an effort before the away keeper made another good save.
The first goal of the game did come, however, on 17 minutes when the Blues won a free kick on the edge of the area and Ashton Rayworth struck home right footed into the Bungay keeper’s bottom right hand corner.
Will Hart then made the keeper make another decent save before on 29 minutes, Hano Hawar dribbled into the away box and slot home for number two.
Cusca went close with two attempts that flew over the crossbar but the visitors came back into the tie on 37 minutes.
A free kick into the box wasn’t dealt with and Bungay shot home into Copping’s bottom left hand corner to pull a goal back.
Little action in front of goal before half time saw Leiston go in just the goal up at the interval.
The Bungay keeper did well to punch away a corner on 54 minutes but the Blues scored a third on the hour mark.
Andrei Cusca did well to control a cross from Ashton Rayworth and turn and shoot into an empty net.
Nathaniel Copping took a cross from a free kick on 66 minutes while sub Ollie Long went close on 70 minutes.
As time ticked down, Stan Horne had a couple of efforts while Long worked the keeper who made two good saves.
Bungay went through on Copping’s goal but the shot was tame and Zion Makan shot wide just outside the box, with the ball going inches wide of the Bungay keeper’s right hand post.
Long went close in what proved to be the last piece of action for the evening as the referee blew for full time.
The result puts the U18s into the Second Round of this season’s Suffolk Boys U18s Midweek Cup, with the draw yet to take place.
