Blues go down to ‘The Lambs’ in FA Trophy

The Blues went out of the FA Trophy at the 1st Qualifying Round stage for the first time in six seasons as a very good Tamworth side proved to strong for Leiston. Josh Cheetham pulled up in the warm up so in came Jerry Kamanzi. Rob Eagle, Louie Bloom and Tom Woerndl were all out injured but Kyle Hammond returned to the starting eleven after being away on holiday.

Leiston started the match well and kept possession of the ball early on but couldn’t test Jasbir Singh in the home goal. Tyrell Waite had the first effort on goal in the contest but Charlie Beckwith saved comfortably. ‘The Lambs’ forced a couple of corners but the Blues defended them well. James Fry shot past Beckwith’s left hand post from the edge of the area while Noel Aitkens’ header was straight at keeper Singh. Tamworth did open the scoring in the contest on the half hour mark as Rhys Hoenes dribbled past a couple of Blues defenders and then rounded Beckwith in the Leiston goal to give the home side the lead. Tamworth, who reached the final of the FA Trophy in 2003 before losing to Burscough 2-1, started to stamp their authority on the match although Leiston did have a good chance from a corner to level that the hosts didn’t clear but Siju Odelusi shot straight at Singh. Rhys Hoenes shot well over for Tamworth when it looked like George Keys was fouled but the referee played on however with just five minutes to go before the break, Tyrell Waite got at the Blues back line once again and finishing neatly past Beckwith.

The second period started quite evenly but Tamworth soon got on top and Tyrell shot over the crossbar when well placed. Shortly later, Hoenes also was off target after good build up play from Tamworth. But Tamworth did add a third goal after 62 minutes when Dan Creaney netted a header from a corner to seal their passage into the next round. Both teams made changes as Tamworth hit the crossbar through Tyrell Waite from distance. Leiston created a few half chances as subs Iuri Fernandes and Ben Stannard fired wide of the target, while Mason Sinclair’s strike was straight at keeper Singh. Rhys Hoenes went through one on one with Beckwith but the keeper saved well and Siju Odelusi cleared the loose ball before Bilal Yafai curled a shot forcing Beckwith into another decent stop. In the last minute of the match, another good move by the home team allowed them to cross from the left and Creaney volleyed home from close range for Tamworth’s fourth goal to round of proceedings.
Leiston are now only left in the Suffolk Premier Cup as they continue their league campaign next weekend at home to 10th placed Bromsgrove Sporting.
