This is the Blues first match in the Suffolk Premier Cup since March 2020, just days before Lockdown was announced. That evening, Leiston went down 1-0 at home to Needham Market after conceding an early goal after just two minutes of the tie. Needham went on to win the Trophy that season as they beat Lowestoft over two legs 4-3.

Tonight will be the fourth time the sides have met in the competition. Leiston played Brantham Athletic in their first ever season in the competition, winning 1-0 on the 22nd November 1986. The Blues have defeated the ‘Imps’ also in November 2013 (2-1) and October 2016 (5-1), with both games at Brantham.

Tonight will be Leiston’s 47th game in the competition, which have brought 31 wins. Leiston have scored 104 goals in them games. The Blues have lost four times in the final before but have won it twice, in 2018 and 2019.

Brantham are currently 18th in the Thurlow Nunn Premier and are managed by ex Leiston player Pip Boyland.

Blues joint boss Chris Wigger said on Monday evening: -

‘Without doubt February has been a disappointing month for myself and Darren and there is no way to dress that up! Our squad has been tested to its limits and results have reflected this. Every team at some stage of the season will come up against injuries and suspensions and we are no different, however, it’s nice to be coming out of that period, but also where we are now gaining players, from either injury, suspensions or by adding to the squad. That is a massive change in dynamic going into Tuesday’s cup game with Brantham. A game we will be going all out to win.‘

Other games on Tuesday night in the Turners Hyundai Suffolk Premier Cup 2nd Round: -

Needham Market v Walsham le Willows
Haverhill Rovers v Woodbridge Town
Hadleigh United v Lakenheath.
