
OVERVIEW
THE Blues head to Needham Market FC to play Felixstowe & Walton United tonight in the final of the Endeavour Automotive Suffolk Premier Cup.
Leiston’s league win at Saturday helped them maintain 9th place in the league table against an in form Banbury United team.
Ollie Yun and Wyatt Hill are hoping to be fit for the match but Ismael Fatadjo is expected to miss the game with injury along with Cameron Rayworth, while Adam Mills is cup-tied.
This will be the Blues eighth Suffolk Premier Cup Final. Leiston lost their first four (all at Portman Road) in 2006, 2007 and 2008 before reaching the final again in 2016 but lost to Lowestoft Town 3-1.
They finally won the competition in 2018, beating Bury Town 3-0 and they beat Felixstowe & Walton United 3-2 a year later.
Chris Wigger was in charge when the Blues went down to Needham Market on penalties in 2022 at Colchester United FC, after the game ended 0-0.
Felixstowe & Walton United put Leiston out of last year’s competition at Ipswich Wanderers when they lost 2-1. Jamar Loza had put Leiston ahead in the first half.
Felixstowe & Walton United have lost in seven Suffolk Premier Cup Finals to date. They sit third currently in the Isthmian Division One North, with a play-off berth virtually assured.
Leiston and Felixstowe & Walton United haven’t met in the league since the 2010/2011 season. That season Leiston won the Ridgeons Premier League.
Simon Head got two goals at Dellwood Avenue in October 2010. A.Hampson and J.Seaman scored for the ‘Seasiders’ that night. In the return game at Leiston in February 2011, Michael Brothers and Angelo Harrop scored as Leiston won 2-0.
The two sides met regularly when Leiston played in the Eastern Counties in the early 2000’s.
Craig Taylor (2) and Carl Chenery scored for the Blues in November 2003 as Leiston won 3-1. L.Hunn netted for Felixstowe. Ivan Fryer scored twice and Leiston won the home fixture 2-0 in April 2004.
Leiston beat Felixstowe & Walton United in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round the following season. The sides drew 1-1 at Felixstowe on the Saturday before Leiston won 4-1 in the replay the following Tuesday.
The teams met in November 2006 once again at Felixstowe in the league, with Leiston winning 6-0. Liam Manning (2), Stewart Roach (2), Blair Hammond and Danny Stanley netted the goals.
Leiston won 3-1 in March 2007, with Chris Dennett, Lee McGlone and Stewart Roach scoring. D.Phillips scored for Felixstowe.
The sides met in the second league game of the campaign in August 2007. Leiston won 4-2, with Lee McGlone, Gerrard Nash and own goal and Danny Stanley on target. D.Phillips got two for Felixstowe as the came a place above the Blues that season in 8th position.
Jud Chenery scored but Leiston lost 4-1 in February 2008. N.Calver, G.Frost (2) and an own goal on target for Felixstowe.
The Blues beat Felixstowe 6-0 in October 2008, a week before Leiston played Lewes in the FA Cup. A Lee McGlone hat-trick, Stuart Boardley, Chris Sillett and Marc Lowe helped Leiston to the win.
In February 2009, a Jamie Rowe hat-trick plus goal from Stuart Boardley and Michael Brothers helped Leiston to a 5-0 win.
The following campaign saw Leiston win 5-0 at Felixstowe in November 2009. Goals from Allicion Blake, Neil Calver, Danny Cunningham, Paul Hart and Lee McGlone saw the Blues to the three points but Felixstowe drew 2-2 at Leiston in December 2009. Paul Hart and Shane Wardley scored for Leiston while K.Hetherington and D.Wright scored for Felixstowe.
Leiston have played a cup final before at Needham Market FC. They beat Histon Reserves 3-2 after extra time at the end of the 2001/2002 season (their first season at Step 6). Lee Newson struck the winner in extra time.

Felixstowe Rugby Union Football Club was founded in 1930 and plays in the Eastern Counties Leagues.
Felixstowe pier was opened in 1906, rebuilt in late 2017, and re-opened in 2018. During the Second World War the majority of the pier, at the time one of the longest in the country and complete with its own train, was purposely demolished by the Royal Engineers to prevent it from being used as an easy landing point for enemy troops.

COMING UP FOR THE BLUES
LEISTON head to the Midlands for the final time in the regulation season at the weekend (Sat 12th April) to play Stourbridge. It will also be their final Saturday away game of the season. The last two weeks of the campaign sees the Blues host Halesowen Town on Saturday 19th April before heading to Lowestoft Town for a local derby on Easter Monday (21st April). The final game of the season will see Leiston welcome Biggleswade Town to Suffolk (Sat 26th April).
