OVERVIEW
LEISTON head to North London to play Cheshunt on Saturday afternoon in FA Cup action (3pm kick off), writes Craig Cooper.
Leiston enter at this stage of the competition (First Round Qualifying), along with other Step 3 teams. The Blues will be without Wyatt Hill who got injured on Bank Holiday Monday at Needham Market.
Back-to-back league wins last weekend saw Leiston move up ten places from 18th to 8th in the Southern League Central Premier Division.
If he plays this weekend, Ryan Jarvis will make his 100th Blues appearance. The Blues player/coach has been with the club since the summer of 2022 and has scored twice in that time, including a goal against Redditch United last Saturday.
MEET CHESHUNT
CHESHUNT have had a good start to the season, and sit 3rd in the Isthmian Premier Division, a league that Leiston played in for the first six years of Step 3 football they played.
They have won four and lost one match of their five league games played so far.
They were promoted to the National League South a couple of years ago but suffered relegation back to Step 3.
The club were formed in 1946 and they have reached the 4th Round Qualifying stage of the competition five times, most recently in the 1977/1978 season.
John Poole has made the most appearances for the club with 512, while Darrell Cox has scored the most goals with 152.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS
THE Blues and Cheshunt have met before four times, with Leiston winning three and the other being a draw.
The Blues played their first home game at Step 4 against Cheshunt, on Tuesday, 23rd August 2011. Leiston won 2-0 in front of 150 people, with David Head and Gareth Heath netting the goals.
The teams played the return game on New Year's Eve 2011, with Leiston winning 2-0. Gareth Heath and Rhys Henry were on target this time, with 158 people watching on.
The sides played each other in the 2018 FA Cup, at this very stage, in September that year.
Mark Hughes and Hafeez Sabusi goals put the hosts in control but Christy Finch and Dominic Docherty earned Leiston a draw, in front of a crowd of 164.
The replay saw Leiston win 4-2. Cemal Ramadan and a Christy Finch penalty put the Blues two up at half-time but two Ricky Sappleton goals levelled the game up on the hour mark. However, the Blues weren’t to be denied their place in the next round, and goals from Jake Reed and Matt Blake meant they set up a home tie with Hastings United.
Unfortunately, the Blues went out in the next round 4-3, with Hastings ending the game with eight players.
