OVERVIEW
THE Blues head to Crown Meadow on Tuesday night to play in round one of this season’s Endeavour Automotive Suffolk Premier Cup against Lowestoft Town. (7.45pm kick off), writes Craig Cooper.
The tie is just one of two round one games in this season’s competition, with the other seeing an Ipswich Town XI take on Hadleigh United.
A 2-1 win at Cheshunt in North London on Saturday saw the Blues progress in the Emirates FA Cup. Goals from Willie Clemons and Ben Fowkes saw Chris Wigger’s team beat a side who have started well in the Isthmian Premier Division. Leiston entertain Hackney Wick next Saturday at Victory Road in the second qualifying round.
Defender Wyatt Hill is expected to miss the match against Lowestoft Town with injury. Lowestoft, meanwhile, lost 3-2 in Essex at Witham Town, to depart the FA Cup.
PREVIOUS PREMIER CUP MEETINGS
LOWESTOFT and Leiston have met in the last two seasons of the Suffolk Premier Cup.
The Blues won on penalties in the quarter-finals of the competition on the 17th October 2023. Joseph Chidyausiku‘s first half goal put Leiston ahead but Harvey Sayer’s penalty with just over ten minutes to go sent the game to spot kicks.
Wyatt Hill, Ross Crane, Seb Dunbar, Joe Marsden and Chris Casement scored the penalties as Leiston won 5-4, with Sam Donkin saving Rob Eagle’s penalty.
Last season, on 26th November 2024, Leiston beat Lowestoft Town 2-1 at Victory Road. All the scoring came in the second half, with Ben Fowkes and George Quantrell's goals sending the Blues through, with Harry Barbrook netting the equaliser.
The first-ever tie between the sides in the Suffolk Premier Cup came in 2006, with Lowestoft Town winning 3-2 after extra-time. The sides have met eight times in the Suffolk Premier Cup, with Leiston and Lowestoft Town winning four times each. The Blues first win in the competition against Lowestoft Town was in March 2008, with Luke Eagle’s late winner giving Leiston a 1-0 win, at Woodbridge Town FC.
